Sheath problems

I have an 11yr old gelding that has had a swollen sheath for years now. He is always dirty and has so much black sticky gunk up in there all the time. I have cleaned him and the vet has cleaned him also. We even tried a round of steroids two years ago to see if that would help thinking he was allergic to something. They did nothing. Has anyone experienced this and if so did you have any luck with getting the swelling to go away? The swelling goes down a little but not much and is on both sides. I would love to know what causes the swelling all the time.
Any advice or suggestions would be great!

Yes I have a 27 year old gelding that has a swollen sheath. I read or was told somewhere that it is caused by giving oil to them on their feed. I have been giving the Bluebonnet Shine for a while now not sure that is the cause or not.

my husband's rope horse was like that. Turns out he had summer sores up in there, but they weren't really sores...yet. It was just the inflammation from the flies or the worm larvae or whatever. Then they turned into the actual sores later when the fly season got REALLY bad.

Mine gelding swells during the summer when flies are bad. That turd can stand on three legs and reach up under there and bit it to scratch. That is what causes it to swell

I am going to try the Silver Lining Kidney Support as I have heard about retaining water and toxins. The swelling in his sheath never goes away. It is swelled up during every season of the year.

I have one that has a slight swelll. He has a very minute hernia. You can see it but you can feel it. The vet gave me some magic powder a couple of times and it went down. But it doesn't bother him.
