Ashley Lynn - 2017-06-18 2:06 PM Blast away, but NBHA has become a joke! Why pay a membership and deal with all their internal drama when you can just go to big added money barrel races elsewhere that they don't sanction? They don't pay worth a crap around here. Maybe it's because in Texas we have so many options for added money shows that they have nothing to do with?! But the Texas state NBHA finals very seldom draws many. We went to an open 5,000 added yesterday with 350 head! I haven't had an NBHA memebweship in years for that reason. BBR would be my choice if I wanted to join something and qualify for a finals- better prizes, more money and much less drama.

Totally agree.  NBHA in our area finally went dead several years ago after many questionable decisions by the powers that be.   The final straw was when they wanted to take more money from our district to help the state show because it was in trouble.  They would have used the majority of the end of year awards money, this was in addition to the money already sent in for sanctioned shows.

It sounds like an honest mistake. NBHA state finals in FL is a huge event. When I lived there I would always go. NBHA in FL is still huge for that matter. They don't have as many choices as we do here in TX so they get to get away with their normally crappy payout.

It's drama as usual. But for those bashing NBHA, keep in mind, in Florida it IS the organization to run in and does pay out quite well.  I think the only real mistake here is that entries should have been verified for eligibility prior to draws.  I realize there were over 800 entries...but entries started coming in during February and closed on May 8th.  Yes, a lot of entries to go through, but I don't think impossible to verify in advance.

As for the DQ, I don't know the girl, but I will say on the entry form it stated the pre-requisites to run in big bold letters.  I want to believe it was an honest mistake as I think it would be crazy to purposefully spend that kind of money and time knowing you could be DQ'd.  People are human and make mistakes no doubt, I'm guessing she just didn't read the requirements or pay attention to the timing of her membership renewal.

Regardless, I still had fun there and really don't understand all the negativity from certain people.  But many of those people just like to complain.  If it wasn't the DQ, it'd be the weather, or where they were stalled, or the ground, or......etc.  Some people literally do not know how to be happy.

Coming from someone who has hit the jackpot at the Florida state show, the only reason I run is because I know each year we get close to 900 sometimes more runners And the payout is usually huge. I've won over $1000 and qualified for finals many times, it's a fun show and a great venue (the silver Spurs indoor air conditioned arena). I run my 3 shows just so I can go each year.

The DQ-ed runner has not had her membership since last spring I believe 2016, therefor she even ran last year not being a member. Whether it was a mistake or not, like everyone else has said NBHA shouldn't be responsible for renewing your membership, they send you a reminder, you have a 30 day grace period to renew it. It's like anything else in life - does the tax, tag and title office badger you to renew your stuff? No, they remind you and it's your responsibility or you will pay for the consequences. Simple as that.
