| I found one old thread on Teff. But only a few responses from a few years ago. I now have Teff available and bought a couple bales. Does anyone feed it ???? My horses seem to really like it and it's so much better priced than Timothy. Thanks ! |

Location: Mountains of VA | It is not better priced than Timothy here in Virgina. From what I understand, it is extremely hard to get a stand started and growing, maybe that is only here. Our hay grower has lots of experience and is extremely meticulous but continues to have problems with the Teff.
Not sure if the extra cost is warrented unless you have a horse with metabolic issues or if Teff is even needed. |

| Mine are on teff right now. I LOVE IT. It comes from one of the biggest farming families in the state, so it is awesome quality (I'm sure quality varies), but I absolutely love what it has done to my horses. This is the first time I have ever tried it. I have always fed this farms bermuda. |

WHOA, we would not be able to afford even a single horse with those prices. We usually buy Timothy X Orchard grass mix, big bales, we weigh one or two every time we pick up a load but it comes from the same grower. Approx. 50 - 55 lbs. $6.00/bale. Alfalfa, same weight and price. I think his Teff is a little smaller bale for $6.00/bale. We buy his round bales which are rolled at the edge of fields and usually has weeds or may have been rained on but not rolled wet, 4 X 5 rolls $35/roll. We usually feed this to the sheep during the winter, sometimes the horses if we have lots of snow and really cold temps. |

| My FIL grows Teff. It is difficult to get planted correctly because the seeds are so small and can't be planted very deep. It has to be planted each year because it dies with a freeze. But it is a great forage. I think it tests pretty similar to alfalfa as far as protein. I believe his is priced the same as alfalfa, $10 per bale for a 60lb bale. |

Location: sunny california | i like teff hay as it is more consistantly low in sugar. However it does uptake alot of iron, so for that reason I do not use it as the only source of forage. i like mine to have a variety of hays. I still believe that Timothy is the best hay for horses. so I feed it and cut with some teff or bermuda to keep the costs down. I also feed a little orchard alf mix. |

| I LOVE teff grass. Horses seem to love it and they look great on it. I have never had one turn their noses up to it and have even seen them eat it before alfalfa. Nutritional content is between alfalfa and timothy. I just found a source close to me an am pretty happy about it. |

Funny you say that, just this morning my horses are eating the TEFF BEFORE their alfalfa!!! Doesn't hurt my feelings any! On these super hot days out here I like to have as much grass going through them as possible. |

Good thing is that they don't tend to get hot on it either. Double win! |

Location: Willows, CA | I use teff in some of the diets I do for IR or overweight horses in places where customers can get it cut in the early head stage. NSC usually runs around 8% or a little less, and that is mostly starch with very little sugar. Nice hay to use in a balanced diet, and it can provide between 80% and 90% of the nutritional profile horses need. Cal/phos ratios run about 2 to 1. |

Location: California | I fed it this past winter when my horses and goats were tossing their rye grass out of their feeders and stomping it in the mud. They cleaned up the teff and all held their weight just fine, even the old ones. |

Location: So Cal | I just started getting teff for my pony and mini. They don't like it as much as the alfalfa, but it's perfect because then I can throw them more and they eat it slower throughout the day. They're super easy keepers, so before they barely got any alfalfa and would finish it quickly. I've still been giving a handful of alfalfa with it so they don't get too mad at me. Haha. I paid something like $17.95 for 100lb bales of teff and it's nice. |
