Just noticed that one of my horses has a small round sore/scab on the outside of both hocks. Is this a sign that the hocks are sore, or just from laying down? They are all out on pasture 24/7.

No visible signs when riding or affecting how she is working.

Those are from lying down. Where hoof rubs

It is caused by horses laying down on hard surfaces. Horses in stalls with deep bedding rarely get them.

Well this is good news! I've never had one get these out on pasture, so I was concerned!

Mine has them no matter where he is kept. I never have worried about it too much. One horse out of six gets them and they are all in the same environment. This one gets them on the inside and outside of his hocks so not all parts can touch the ground.

I think they do get irritated from laying down BUT then mine become full blown sores because the flies get in them. If I keep a salve on them they heal up.

If they are getting to be a big problem, a smart lady once told me you can put a little piece of elasticon on the hock where they get them as a preventative or to help an open one heal up quicker. She said some horses just get them from the way they get up and down laying
