My 13 year old daughters mare was diagnosed yesterday with a bone chip in her right stifle. She has surgery at the end of the week. What are your experiences with this type of surgery? Recovery time? How to speed and help ensure full recovery? Any info is appreciated! We are completely heartbroken but trying to hope for the best!

**UPDATE**: The "chip" is actually a piece of meniscus that has torn off and calcified. Looks like her meniscus was "squished out" at some point and this piece broke off. Her prognosis is currently less than 50% that she will be able to compete another 6 months to a year. Surgeon did say her joint looked better than he thought it would but now that it involves the meniscus instead of bone, it is more of an issue so I guess time will tell. She gets PRP injections in 2 weeks and then again in another 2 weeks. She will be off until spring of next year so I guess we will wait and see how she comes back!

In my opinion you should not speed along the process. Time heals many things. We've had a horse who had double knee surgery and they told us 90 days, at 90 days he was still dead lame. We gave him an entire year and he came back sound as can be.

Yes I understand time is needed. By speed up the process, I don't mean we want to be competing on her in a week. She will more than likely have the next 8 months off due to it being winter here before she is over the 90 day hump. What I mean is, what does everyone use to promote healing? Supplements, magnetic products, BOT, hand walking exercise etc?

I've heard some really good things coming from PEMF therapy.

I retired mine when he tore his. I gave him 2 years off and he never came back 100%. He was 17 when he tore his.

Thank you! I like to hear the good and bad stories! The mare is 10 years old. She was heavily calf roped on as a 4 year old then was mostly a trail horse for 5 years and we have had her with us for a year and she is my daughters barrel horse. The surgeon called me after surgery and said the joint looked a lot better than he was expecting. He said her prognosis still wasn't great but the joint was better than he thought it would be.

I'm not ready to give up on her and she will have the next 8 months off before we slowly start legging her up and see what happens.

She was not lame when I decided to take her to the vet. She was running great but I just didn't like that she stood with her right rear leg way out behind her all the time. I knew something was wrong but wasn't sure what. The vet was shocked that she was running as good as she was.

I know it is not likely, but I hope to make a miracle out of her. We are going to slowly start horse shopping as we know that we wont get much time out of her and maybe someday we will breed her. I've never done that before but I won't sell her to someone that will possibly run the crap out of her either.

I always have to give a "thank you" to the responsible horse owners that take care of their horses and look out for them even if their career has ended
