Has anyone gone to a SRM clinic or TJ and can give me an idea if you learned a lot, if it was an experience you would take again? One day clinic at $400, I need to know I will get my moneys worth. Broke college kid life.

I'm kinda funky, but if I was going to spend that much to go to a clinic- I would want to go to one put on by a trainer. While both of those girls are amazing jockeys, they both win on horses others have trained. Reputable trainers usually have a better eye for how to fix certain things for both horse and rider. Like I stated- they are amazing jockeys, but I'm not sure what they could bring to a clinic.

ETA- if I were to pick one- I would go to Taylor's. I've been around her since she was a kid and she is the better horseman of the two, IN MY OPINION. She's pretty dang wicked with a rope in her hand too.

Not knocking on any of this said above ^^ But just wanted to say that Sarah and her family did train Bling. Sarah had been riding her since she was 3-4. Actually Diamond is the first horse I can think of that they bought for someone elses program.

I agree.

Also consider a 2 day clinic with Paul Humphrey is $450 for example. $400 for 1 day is really steep IMO.

Absolutely AGREE.... WHen you are considering a clinic, stop and look at how many horses are out there running TRAINED by said clinician! How many SHaron Camarillo horses are running today???? How many barrel races has she been to???? SOme have built an empire around that one or more NFR trips but doesn't mean they are trainers.

Used to I only went to a certain clinician but when she retired I would base it on what I felt I needed to address. If I was on a young/unseasoned horse, I went to someone who trained a lot of good ones, if I felt it was me who needed the tune up and I was on a seasoned horse, I went with someone who won on a lot of different horses whether she trained them or she was running someone else's horse.

I don't know, I mean how many of us buy finished horses?  They may not have trained theirs, but they sure know how to get with one and win.  I believe there is something to be learned from almost anybody out there.

I think this is something that you and you alone truly have to decide whom you want to spend your money on. I have taken my daughter to 2 of Sarah's clinic's and she learned nothing really different than what she had learned at other clinics however I will say that Sarah has a way of explaining that makes a lot of sense. She spends a lot of time working and teaching drills that will help your pattern. I was very hesitant about going but was very impressed. I am also of the belief that you can always learn and if you leave with 1 thing then you did not waste your time.

This is a great point! You need to find someone who can explain things in a way you understand.

Her uncle, Steve McDonald trained Bling. Not to say much of her sucess is not owed to Sarah.

Copied from an interview of Sarah Rose McDonald with Barrel Racer News:

Sarah Rose states, “My family is from the east cost of Georgia. My parents, Mike and Carol are very supportive along with my older siblings; brother Matthew and sister, Brook. My niece Anna Williams also runs barrels. My uncle, Stephen McDonald trains all of our horses along with outside horses. Our close family friend Larry Ammons and my family operate A&M?Performance Horses.”

In every interview I've ever seen with SRM, she has credited her uncle with training Bling. She did start competing on Bling as a 4yo though, so I think it says a lot about her abilities to jockey a young horse at that level and keep her winning for several years.

WIth her uncle helping her and tuning behind the scenes every step of the way.  If you go back in her fb posts she'll  talk about going home to get help from him when she was hauling bling.

Not saying she can't give you pointers but I'd go with a different clincian for that money.  Maybe you could audit one for cheaper?

Taking a different perspective on things, since most people don't actually train their horses but buy a finished or nearly finished horse. And Sarah has had success on 100s of different horses back east prior to her rodeo career she would probably have good pointers for being able to adapt to a lot of different styles of horses and has experienced many different bumps in the road that come along with "clicking" with horses that you didn't train yourself. Just saying it depends on what your trying to get out of the clinic and what's best suited for your daughters understanding.

My thoughts, too.

This is true. Considering most people buy horses already trained this would probably be a helpful thing for people to learn at a clinic.

first off this is JMO.
I learn new things all the time, never feel like I know enough. I show finished horses only that have only  trained by my husband. I loved watching Bling at the NFR but I don't want to look like Ms Sarah on a horse. It's just a matter of style. I like to see a quiet seat. I have been to audit barrel clinics and enjoy seeing different techniques. having said that I take home a bunch in my head but seldom retain a days worth of ideas that I can put into practice. I think its best to work one on one with some one on  the way they do things  over weeks or months but a day show of 3-5 hundred dollars........no
