My mare is off the track but doesn't have one, what made you decide to put one in? She is not mareish or hormonal at all(turned out with 5 geldings, only mare, would never know it). She has had some lower back/upper hip pain tho. She is on Previcox as a preventative, lives in her MagnaCu blanket and is turned out 24/7. also gets PEMF weekly/bi weekly. Saddle fit is fine... would a caslick help?

I would just do it next time she is under for something.  The procedure is super simple and does not cost a lot.  There aren't really any negatives to having one in.  Just have to cut it open if you ever breed her.

IMO which means nothing to anyone but me but a performance mare of any kind should be sutured (caslicks) if she is ever bred take them out to breed then put right back in after confirmation of pregnancy!

I find it amazing that people decide NOT to put caslicks in performance mares. If nothing else it is a proactive step to protecting the general and reproductive health of the mare.

I had a vet look at me like I had 2 heads when I requested a Caslick's - I no longer use that vet. I would have to ask why not do the procedure? It's a simple procedure that could prevent a LOT of issues in the future.

If your mare is off the track, I would almost BET she's already had it done. I never knew a trainer who didn't have this as a common practice.

You don't need a caslick ... just ask the vet to sew her up ..

This is only done if a mare is sucking air and getting uterus infections ..
has nothing to do with back or hip pains ..

If I had a mare that was on the track and wasn't given a caslick's, I'd have to question the ability of the trainer and if he even had a license.

A very reputable track vet once told me that he was shocked by the number of barrel racers that didn't get a caslick's done. He said that anytime you have a mare traveling at a high rate of speed and splitting the back legs, you need a caslick's. Ever since that conversation, I have it done. Usually if I buy a young one, it's done when we get wolf teeth pulled.

This is new to me, I don't think I know hardly anyone who has done a caslick on their mare. Can someone explain why it needs to be done? I know what it is but I don't know much about the reasoning behind why they're apparently so necessary? The only people I know who have done them did it because of chronic infections in older mares.

Running and splitting the legs causes a mare to suck air into the reproductive system. Especially in younger mares where the vulva is up and down. Here's a good article.

Well when my vet (who is a track vet) told me he thought some people just did it to say they did, lifted my mares tail and said " oh, we better sew her up." Lol evidently my mare has a big hoohah.
