| Be sure to check who the insurance carrier is, not the agent (such as LCI, Wilkins, etc). A good agent can be very helpful but The agent does not decide what is and isn't covered. The insurance company/actual policy is.
I have our horses insured with The Hartford. I have had no issues filing claims or getting paid (they actually paid my vet directly for a $5600 surgery). As an insurance agent myself, I have reviewed multiple different insurance carriers and I felt The Hartford was the best choice for our horses.

Very true, but from experience it is your agent that will back your claim. In the past they just referred me to the claims adjuster and wouldn't answer my questions. When the claim was denied, they didn't offer any advice or even ask to talk to the adjusters. I was on my own.
Also know your policy and what it covers and especially DOES NOT COVER. Mine with Audie was full if Endorsements. That is what you want. Mine in the past had exclusions. Pretty much excluded everything even after I asked for a policy that covered mortality. Some will excude due to west nile, acts of God (lightning), hit by vehicle or if chased by a dog (thorugh a fence etc). It took 15 yrs but I finally feel I have a handle on this insurance thing and how to get the best policy.

I agree 100% - your agent should back your claim and go to bat for you... but, we all know that doesn't always happen. Being that I am an insurance agent (commercial/business insurance) I handle my own claims directly :) I just want to bring to light that consumers need to know both your agent and insurance carrier. The insurance company dictates what is and isnt covered, not the agent.
When I quoted my equine insurance I literally made a spreadsheet and compared about 6 different insurance companies. What was covered, what wasnt covered, any special stipulations (such as vaccines, wobblers, WNV...). Agents should know all this as they are selling the product, but ultimately the responsiblity falls back on the consumer. Sadly, most consumers don't realize something isn't covered until it happens.
In my opinion, The Hartford had better policy forms than the other carriers I looked at (but, it wasn't the cheapest either). Great American wasn't bad either. You couldn't pay me to put my insurance with Catalin.
