I was talking today to a horse trader who was buying colts at the Hermanson Kist sale. Bought a bunch of big, plain colored colts. He told me that he sends them to a lab in Iowa where they 'bleed' them for blood components (plasma) for human use. They won't take grays, roans, or pal/buckskins, only black, brown, sorrel, or bay. Anyway, during the course of this discussion. It came to light that they don't just take some blood, they take it ALL. They bleed them out completely. I was taken aback, as I've never heard this before. My response was simply "Ick." And I walked away.
Looking for information, who knows anything about this?

The cruelty we humans can inflict sickens me.

Reason #1 I don't sell horses anymore, can't pick where they end up even if they are sold to a "great" home. Those poor colts.

Disturbing, yes ...... bleeding them completely out?  No..... that would not make a lick of sense to pay for a horse and then kill it....they keep them and continually bleed them ....

This is not true. They collect plasma just like the do at human collection centers. The amount they take is according to the weight of the horse. That is why the like big horses. The horses make antibody against an antigen they are injected with. The animals that produce are very valuable. This person misunderstands the procedure. I worked in this industry for 10 years with goats and they were taken care of very well. They had the best feed and housing. Please investigate things you hear before you forward the information.
Thanks.

This is correct. Years ago, I had a student who was bitten by a copperhead. He was given a fit in that happened to be in horse serum. He was very allergic to the horse serum and was a sick young man. First of all, many people are allgeric to horse serum given large amounts would have catastrophic results. This is not a new procedure. What would these companies do with piles of horse carcasses?

Thank you for posting Iowa.

A Lyle biology lesson. Humans have 48 chromosomes. Horses have 64. You can't just give people plasma from any animal. If you could you could just transplant hearts or anything. Yes they do use serum from horses for vaccines but that is completely different.

Note to self:  Remember, horse traders LOVE tall tails-what an idiot!  Reason #983 I no longer trust anyone within 100 miles of that horse sale! The best place in the country to get swindled is at a horse sale. (and yes I do realize I'm making a blanket statement-I do know there are some good sales-but the majority are not)

100% agree...Horse sales are something I'd have nothing to do with ever again as a buyer or seller. Finally had the last of them 14 yrs ago, haven't been back to one since. Same goes for horse traders!

agreed. I work in the industry. There are regulations that set the protocol for how much an animal can be bled based on weight. IACUC is involved and it has to be approved by them before doing the procedure. (The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is a federally mandated committee, qualified through the experience and expertise of its members, that oversees its institution's animal program, facilities, and procedures.) Im surprised they use animals from an unknown background. These animals are more valuable alive then dead. Also labs will follow the 3 Rs. Replacement, reduction, refinement.
