Im not very good at picking out "good" confirmation. Im just a local barrel racer, small rodeos and open shows. I don't have much money to spend on a barrel horse. So what are the MAIN things you look for in a horse when you're on a budget? I only have about 2000 to spend. The pony I run now I only spent $400 on and she was an extremely lucky and rare find. Thanks so much.

Β Good feet - make sure they're big enough with some concavity. I look for a short back, longer underline, low set hocks, short patterns, and a good slope to the shoulder. They need to be correct in the legs - no paddling out or toeing in when they move. Nice free movement in their shoulders and good reach in behind. Look for fluid movement. If their bone structure is correct, you can always add weight. Bit if the bone structure isn't good you'll have issues you'll have to maintain.

You can get perfect conformation without having to pay a ton. Breeding plays a big part in $$$$ but I see gorgeous horses all the time for very reasonable amounts. Google correct conformation and you will get diagrams that show what kind of slope you want in the shoulder, hips, pastern angles, shape of front and back legs, neck etc

This!! You can buy a well put together prospect that isn’t designer bred much cheaper than a well bred prospect with flaws.

Much agreed on the kind eye. That can tell so much about one.
