Earlier this year I did an HHA on my gelding.  DePaulo recommends a diet free of soy, sugar, and molasses.  I didn't want to change my feeding program in the middle of the competition year, but am ready to make a change now and see how he does in the off season.  I can understand sugar and molasses, but why soy free?

Some horses are allergic to soy and it causes an inflammatory response in those horses.

Mark usually recommends Renew Gold for those reasons.

the soy thing has largely been extrapolated from data seen in people who consumed a lot of soy... There were studies that looked to see if high soy diets could be beneficial in regards to preventing/reducing cancer risk in women, but the results were fairly bland. Also looked at if high soy reduced fertility and semen production in men, which it didnt. Other places have tried to claim that high soy diets can dysregulate hormones in women and reduce fertility but studies looking into that have pretty much shut that down. I started seeing the no soy diet trend with horses first for broodmares (probably because of the anecdotal reports in women that high soy reduces fertility) and now its seems more and more people are jumping on the idea that soy is bad for other reasons.

I have one who i’m 99% sure is allergic to soy. However, I don’t want to risk her health to be 100% positive. Nothing on my place gets a processed feed, and β€œknock on wood”, I haven’t had an issue
