Has anyone ever traded a horse + a breeding out of one of their mares (to stud of other person's choice, but retaining ownership of the mare-kind of like a lease) for another horse?
How was the contract written? Were there any issues? etc.
Did you keep the mare at your barn or did you let them take the mare?

The way you state it is a little confusing so let's take the 5 items and
break them down.

1.) trading a horse for a horse is standard transfers

2.) Breeding one of your mares to a stallion of their choice

Use an AQHA lease form which also has a specific ending date
and you can end it at any time if certain things in the lease are
not followed. Used to be $50 to file the lease with AQHA.
Attach an addendum if space on form is too small.

i.e. If lease gets 2 months behind on feed bill (which means 35ish
days) No pay on May 1 and June 5 .. is two months. You can break the
lease.

Make note if lease is broken by the leasee they forfeit all ownership/breeders
rights to the foal. Only have one persons name on lease ... you do not want
to deal with any drama between two people if they have a disagreement.

CS shipping only .. the way they can hang it to you if they decide the stud
fee, vet charges and daily mare care at stud farm is too expensive and
leave you hanging with the bills at the stud farm to get your mare back.

All insemination fees, stud fees, CS shipping and transporting mare
to the vet is the lease's responsibility.
(and have common sense on this ... if CS IS SHIPPED ... YOU KNOW STUD
FEE AND CS SHIPPING HAS BEEN PAID) Send a copy of the lease to the
stud owner by certified mail with return when booking fee has been paid
so they know how to list the leasee as the breeder on their stallion report for
name on the printed AQHA breeders report//registration is correctly in
leasee's name ......

if lease is broken notify stud owner and AQHA in the
same way ... INVALID LEASE BROKEN W/DATE .. across the face of a copy.

3.) kEEP THE MARE AT YOUR BARN AND USE THEIR VET AT THEIR COST;
FARRIERS ETC ETC You can show or give a copy of the lease only to those
that will be providing a service in order to have an open acct to bill the
leasee. It is the leasee who decides on the 3-5-7 month Rhino shots or
any other standard vet work. The open acct's is so you can call their vet /others
if an emergency occurs.

4) CHARGE $100?/MONTH FOR FEED HAY AND GENERAL CARE AS YOU
HAVE DONE IN THE PAST ... she is still your horse, so you are not going
to starve or mistreat her ...

5) Length of lease ... does it end when foal is born or continue when weaned
at 6 months old... do not let them wean at any earlier time ... too risky to
end up with sick, stunted or dead baby.

OR if mare fails to take >>> does lease continue @ $100/mo until the next
breeding season as written for the follow up try on getting the mare in foal.

It will cost you another $50 for an extension or a duplicate copy to be filed
with AQHA and do it in January so the entire 2nd breeding season is open
to use by the leasee ...

Connected with this, to be fair ...NEXT YEAR when you breed the mare by CS SHIPPING and not
take mare and their baby to a stud farm. If you pasture during the summer plus
feeding mare, weanling and your baby in the oven ... you might cut their $100/month
in half to $50/month. A small gesture like this can cut down on any ill conversations
that might occur until the baby is weaned.

GOOD LUCK .... if there is a chance you might lose a friend or make an enemy ..
do not do it .... just make sure you dot your i's and cross your T's on the lease
which contains a lot of the above with spaces or check off lists.

auto correct going wild on that word LEASEE... grrrr .. to LEASE ...
