I have always wondered. So how do you make it to the NFR? Are there certain rodeos you have to go to to qualify?

Same question for the American.

I’m and English rider switching to barrel racing. Thanks !

NFR goes for money earned by entering WPRA rodeos, the American has a qualifying system as well as exemptions, the exemptions have been different in the past so no real way to tell how that goes.

If you have time can you explain the exemptions. When I went to Vegas this year for the NFR to watch I also watched the barrel race called the β€œall in barrel race” is that for anyone to go to? I know on the 17th they said it was a qualifier. But what is the qualifier for? The American. Sorry for the dumb question. Just trying to figure this stuff out

Exemptions the first year were the top 10 in the WPRA standings I believe. And then they have like invitee which was Charmaynes James I believe. Then they also did a fan vote and Amberly Snyder got in.

The remaining spots are filled by qualifying through the rounds (semi-finals).

Last year, they did exemptions different and it was like the top 5 in WPRA and the top 5 in ERA (which no longer exists) and then an invitee which they held a match race between two barrel racers and Lindsay Sears won and ran at the American.

Different races are held throughout the year as qualifiers. And they take the top 20 (I believe) back from each of those races. Then all the races top 20 compete in the semi finals and they get down to 10. Those 10 run at the American.

Hopefully that makes some sense.

The All In Barrel Race was an open 5D race, but they had an American Qualifier on Sunday morning (these are handled by Better Barrel Races) and the top 10 from that race qualified to go to the semi-finals for The American. The American is essentially an open rodeo, but requires a qualification. Anyone that wants to (and can afford to) can enter a qualifier to try and get to the semi-finals.

To qualify for the NFR you must have a WPRA card and to get that you must first purchase a WPRA permit and win $1,000 on it at approved WPRA races or rodeos. Then it's a lot of hauling!

There are qualifying races for The American held all over the country.

This is the list of qualifying races for the 2018 American. http://www.americanrodeo.com/story/35114967/2018-barrel-racing-qual...

The top 10 from each of these races will go on to the Semi-Finals in Fort Worth, TX in February.

The top 10 from the Semi-Finals go to The American along with the "Exemptions." The American has changed the rules every year so far on who is invited as an exemption, but it usually includes the girls who finished in the top 10 at the NFR.

To qualify for the NFR you have to finish in the top 15 of most money won at WPRA rodeos.
