| I have a 17 yr paint trail horse. Moderate to high withers. Slight dip behind withers but not bad. Not broad shouldered. Pretty average but a little round. Short backed. Nice horse but my 5 star rides down and rubs his withers. Saddle seems to fit. It sits flat and even. He moves out fine.
What pad should I try??
I will not use csi or impact gel. Personal preference. Open to other suggestions!! Please and thanks |

Your 5 star is made of 100% virgin wool ..
so, treat it per the following to retain its
grip on your horses back ...
Use a human stiff bristle hair brush with a handle
or a stiff horse brush >>>
Care and Cleaning
•Prevent dirt and hair build-up on the under side of pad by occasional
brushing. This keep old hair from being pushed further into the pad and
trapping dirt and sweat.
•To remove embedded hair and dirt, rub a dry 5 Star cleaning sponge
(which arrives with the purchase of every 5 Star saddle pad) in a circular
motion on a dry pad.
•For pads with heavy crusted sweat and dirt, break up area with rubber
fingered curry or scrape gently with a dull edged object being careful to
not cut the felt. Vacuum (with a shop vac) if possible, or use a brush to
remove loose material.
Washing
Washing is only necessary if the pad is beginning to feel hard and form
pressure points.
•Use a small amount of soap that is safe for fine wool
•Wash pad from the center to the outer edges. Hang/hold by gullet hole,
rinse from cetner of pad to outer edges, rotating the pad so that the water
flows out towards the edges. Avoid laying the pad flat and rinsing as this
will drive the dirt into the pad.
•Wash/rinse lightly, using only enough water to dissolve the sweat and
dirt residue. Hang by gullet hole of lay over a rail to dry. Avoid laying flat to dry.
•Flex the pad once it is dry to restore the cushion.
When you get thru restoring your pad .. find some medium hand towels and fold
them to lay across the pad in the sunken areas .. fold two together if need be
to allow for compression ...
Then check your tack ... breastcollar tugs attached to saddle Drings or girth buckles.
and make sure your back girth is snug.
I would suggest having a mohair roping girth for a front girth ..
These simple things are natural to give your tack a better grip on horse's body
hair and snug back girth prevents saddle from tilting and inching the saddle backwards.
GOOD LUCK ... look at the money I saved you ...

When the pad rides down onto your horses withers and starts to rub is the saddle sitting down on the withers too? |

| I have a 1 inch Tod Slone pad that I only use on my high withered horse. When I saddle I do make sure that the very front of the pad is pulled up off the withers. I won a 5 star and I am just not that big of a follower of those pads. |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | I have a saddle that is a tad wide {little more then a tad} it will cause the pad to pull down and get tight over the withers even when I tent it. And all I use is 5 Stars. The only time it did this is when I use that one saddle the other saddles it dont do this.

Nope plenty of clearance. The saddle fits. |

Yeah I had that issue in the past (different horse) but I checked and it seems fine. It sits even and flat. Looks like good saddle fit. Maybe I can post a pic later. |

Location: Texas | I have a horse with a dip in his back and high withers, and a Tacky Too swayback pad works really well. It has enough contour that the saddle doesn't mash his withers. |

| 5 Star makes an “open” gullet pad, basically the gullet hole doesn’t close at the front.
Alternatively if you like the pad otherwise you could snip the leather binding the hole closed, as I’m assuming this is what’s rubbing him.
I’ve also heard good things about the classic equine biofit pads that are built up a bit to fill in those pockets, that could be an option as well. |

Location: Texas | Try a SPH pad? They fit nicely to the horse's back, soft material and hold up well to daily wear. Where I put my pad, my saddle and pad stay the entire ride. |

Location: Texas | Saddleright pads have an open wither design. NO wither pressure of any kind. made to stand up in the gullet and provide protection. 34 years of fitting all types of backs with great sucess. Can't beat them! |
