Location: North Dakota | When I was in college, I bought a horse sight-unseen one time. Of course, she was also an unstarted 2-year-old for (I believe) $750. I think I sent the guy $200 to hold her for me and he met me halfway to pick her up and I paid him for his gas. I can't remember if I sent him the rest of the money, or if I paid it to him when we met. However, he only had to haul her about an hour and a half and no crossing state lines.
An 8 hour drive with only a deposit? Nope. I'd have bill of sale completed and paid in full, and be reimbursed for your hauling fees. What will you do if you drive 8 hours and then she stiffs you? Sure, you have a deposit, but that 8 hours home is going to be a loooong drive.

Location: Canada | I agree with others I wouldn't do it without full payment and hauling fee. You're not hauling the horse for her to try so it should be paid in full before you leave. I have bought lots of horses sight unseen and sent money and when the hauler arrived sent the rest. What if you arrive and she doesn't show or decides it's not the right shade of colour she wanted (said dripping with sarcasm) she gets to walk away and lose her deposit where as you're out the time and fuel money.
If it was me and I was comfortable with the individual I'd offer her to come the entire way and she could stay the night and have meals with us before heading back the next day.
If it's a time issue for her there are lots of reputable haulers willing to haul a horse 16 hours. |

| Nope. If they want the horse they need to pick it up or hire someone. I drove 12 hrs one way to look at a horse and brought him home. I wasnt going to put that stress on the seller. Honestly, I wouldnt waste a full day on someone Ive never met. |

Location: Oklahoma | This is what we do, and this is just us. We require a down payment that is none refundable, it is 10% of the asking price of the horse. Once we have that will let the person know we charge so much per mile. We tell everyone this up front and they sign a contract. That way it weeds out the "tire kickers". |

| Back in 2013, I paid an owner $1000 to haul a horse approx 5 hours to my vet for a pre-purchase exam. I mailed them a check, they cashed it, I scheduled with vet, and they brought the horse. This money did not apply to the purchase price. I had just had neck surgery and could not drive. |

Location: Southwest Louisiana | I just bought a horse that was located about 7 hours from me. She sent a gazillion videos, gave me a history of the horse and answered every question I had. I asked around here on BHW about her reputation as a seller, got good info, so I sent the entire payment for the horse. She shipped him here after I paid in full. I paid the shipper in cash when he arrived here (per his request). I would have never assumed a seller would send me a horse without me paying for that horse in full. A deposit is only good for holding the horse, not delivering it to the buyer.
I ONLY did this because people here vouched for the seller as an honest person. If I felt weird about it or had any reservations, I would not have sent full payment without seeing the horse. I would have made the drive myself before sending anything more than a refundable deposit. There are some wacky people out there.

| Actually, I'm sure they gave me this price because they did not want to do it. I surprised them by agreeing, and I've never regretted it. It was a great deal on a horse that I have now owned for four years, and she's a WINNER  |

Hey all! I did not end up hauling the horse. I did not want to be hauling so far for free basically. Then if I did haul that far, I may be putting myself at risk. Initially, the buyer said they would haul to pick the horse up- so I told them I could not haul that far and that they could pick the horse up or arrange shipping. They declined. Glad I didn't take a deposit and drive! I didn't think it was a good idea, but I decided to just see what BHW thought about the situation. |

| The whole thing sounds a little fishy to me. I just bought a horse sight unseen. No pictures nothing. I offered to mail the guy a check and he said no. Drove 4 hours one way to get the horse. To have you drive half way for a lower priced horse sounds like you are being used. Suggest a horse transport then everything will be on her. |

Good for you, you didnt need to be doing all that driving without being payed in full on your horse and not being offered from the the other person to pay you for the hauling, since they declined on the arrange shipping or just picking up the horse I dont think they were serious about buying your horse.  |
