Anyone ever had a horses personality just change as they age and grow up??? Lol. I got my gelding as a 3 year old and now that he is almost 5, is is becoming more independent , etc. not as puppy dog demanding attention as he was before. I think I’m going to miss it. Lol

I have a six year old gelding who was not broke until he was five. He Came from a quality ranch and has been riding for one full year. Once you get a halter on him anyone who can sit up can ride him in a round pen or familiar arena. He is fancy broke and very smart and quiet. The problem I have is he is impossible to catch even with a feed bucket. I feed him in a round pen everyday and it is the only way to catch him. Put him in a stall and you will die before you catch him. EVERY TIME I need to catch him I absolutely MUST run him in the round pen and force him to face me first. Once you get the halter on anyone can handle him! Its a first for me he is so weird and scared!!! He ropes and does the head side of healing. He is over 16 hands and is extremely fast but I have not put any barrel time into him because he is so odd! He is the weirdest horse I have ever owned, a true antisocial horse unless forced to do so!!!

Our TB mare that came off the track had a lot of health issues when we first got her, and she kept herself so isolated, would show no emotion, and just went along with everything like it was routine. She was so used to being poked and prodded that she was bombproof, on the ground and under saddle. After a few months of just allowing her to be a horse and run around in a pasture, she completely changed! She is still bombproof, but now she has quite the personality and is hilarious to be around. She'll come running from five acres away to say hi, and then meander back out into the pasture. She's been a great mother and we can't wait to keep raising more just like her. Her weanling filly is the same way, full of spunk, but just the sweetest puppy dog personality that can't wait to be around you.

I've had them go both ways. My husband's ranch horse (he never babies on them) was sort of watchy and all business until he was about 6 or 7. Then he just started to come out of it and was becoming an attention seeker. Of course when I was finally starting to enjoy him and think he might make a horse for my oldest son, someone hit him on the county road that goes through that pasture and fractured his shoulder.

I've had some others that matured and seemed to have a personality change. Nothing bad, just independent like you mentioned.

Yea mine was always the type who had to be the center of attention etc. would maul you to scratch him. Now he is like an independent teenager. He still does all his jobs extremely well just doesn’t seem to β€œ need” me as much anymore. Lol

My experience has been that horses are who they are right from the moment of birth. But I have had colts that become a little less interested in my company once they go to work; usually resolves when I make the effort to be with them without demands, as in, catch them, give them attention and goodies then take the halter off and walk away.
