| What are some ways to get rid of rain rot in the winter?
I searched past posts and didn’t find anything. I got a new horse in last night and she has rain rot on her back. Trying to find something less messy/wet than MTG. |

Location: Louisiana | I had one with rain rot going into winter, so I bodyclipped the poor thing. But his hair was long and thick, and made it impossible to treat it bc the hair would just mat and clump. When I clipped him it was actually way worse than I thought bc I could see or really feel it with all the hair.
So he got clipped head to toe and I've been diligent about keeping a waterproof sheet on him during warmer wet days, and his blanket anytime the temps get too low.
Clipping also allowed me to just pull off all the nasty scabs and dead hair.
Now he has long hair where the rain rot originally was LOL, nice pretty healthy hair grew back in, and the rest is still short so he's real cute right now!! |

| Bannix works really well. I only had to treat daily for a week before hair was growing back in on my yak. |

Location: Northwest | Topical Fungicide. This is stuff is cheap, sold everywhere and works AMAZING. Hair starts growing back right away.

The above then topically remove all scabs you can then apply this stuff. Unlike MTG you can apply with your bare hands, it smells good, and is antibacterial plus anti fungal.

I use this for anything skin wise it and horseman's dream cream are must haves in the grooming box.

| Blue Dawn Dish soap. Antibacterial, and cheap! Plus no stinky smell like MTG. Worked great for a mare who was guaranteed to get the rot every year. |

Location: SoCal | I won some Synbiont Wound Care wash and it is the only thing that clears up my mares skin fungus without having to give her a full bath. What impressed me was when my gelding got bit by something (we believe some sort of black widow or brown recluse spider, both very possible in our area, we have black widows everywhere) and his neck swelled up to a baseball size, I applied some foam and it was almost gone the next day. Swelling was gone in 2 days and when his skin turned black and sloughed off maybe a week or so after, there was beautiful new skin underneath. I applied it a couple times a day at first and then twice daily if possible, didn't use anything else topically except this, I don't think I even used an antibiotic at the time.
http://www.synbiontwoundcare.com/what-it-does If nothing else works, might be worth a try. I'll probably always keep it on hand after my experience with my gelding.
ETA for my mare, I only have to apply it as needed which is probably every other week. I apply when I notice her skin starting to flake and get "ruffled", or when I notice her itching. It doesn't transfer to any of my other horses and only stays in certain spots for her, so I just spot treat usually. I'm thinking I might try to start applying daily since it's gotten a little worse as of late.
