I recently ordered a saddle and was thinking about the carpet, but the more I felt of them, I realized the carpet was super hard, compared to the softness of the wool.   I went with the wool underside.

Rubber or actual carpet...um No.

Some saddles have a wool type liner that kind of looks like the gray all-weather thin carpet.  It's ok.   Marlene McRae saddles are one that comes to mind, and one of my circle Y JBNs had it.  The other one was fleece.

There are different types of wool/fleece stuff for the underside.  But for the most part that's what saddles have had for probably a 100 years! Why change??

What do you mean by rubber underside? Are you looking at a Double J saddle? I have 3 Double J saddle's and two are Fleece lined and one Foam lined, these are closed cell foam.. theres nothing wrong with a foam lined saddle if its a good closed cell foam if thats what your talking about on the rubber underside of a saddle.

I’ve had Marlene saddles with the carpety bottom. I liked them.

I don’t know if I like the idea of the foam or suede looking ones.

Fleece has always been good!

My two Charmayne james saddles don't use fleece/wool. The cactus one has padded suade and the Reinsman has a carpet like material. I LOVE THEM and no fuss for my horses. Keeps me from having to have them redone every few years when they pack down. And you can really judge saddle fit a lot better.

I can see the good points to all three but personally I like 100% real wool. Better ride altogether for me. But again,  I think each has their own purpose and their own pros.

My Marlene had the gray carpet. I had no complaints. All the other saddles I have owned have had the wool/fleece stuff.
