| Got a new mare in a few days ago. She is an OTT QH that has been turned out for a few years. She has yet to eat a full serving of grain. At home we put water on our feed. She will eat like 1/4 scoop. So I quit putting water on it and no change. I brought her to my vet to have her teeth & coggins done (she has to stay overnight) and she won't touch their sweet feed. She eats some hay and alfalfa. Should I go ahead and treat for ulcers or try something else? I know she's in shock from the change but what else can I do? I can get ulcer meds ASAP. I'm just not used to that being it right off the bat.
Update: We ended up scoping her and she has no signs of ulcers but vet said she is infested with bots! Worming pronto. Hopefully that is the solution. I have never had a horse over-run by worms before. The mare doesn't look unhealthy, but the lady i got her from wasn't in the best of physical condition so im not overly surprised.

| When new horses come in like that who are not used to being hauled or have been in he same place for a long time before I get them all I give is hay 24/7 until they settle in. The worst thing for a horse is sweetfeed anyway so it would be way worse for a stressed horse. Horses can develop ulcers in a matter of hours. She probably got them from the initial change and the seeetfeed simply hurts. Once she settles in, might give a senior feed that is high in fiber and low in sugars/starch a slow try. Work your way up. Until then ulcerguard might not be a bad idea. |

| I don't feed sweet feed. I do agree that its terrible but if that's what she'll eat right now, that's what she can have LOL. I'll start with ulcer meds and see if there is a change. Thanks |

Location: my piece of paradise | It may take her a few weeks to settle in. I would keep hay in front of her like mentioned above. You could always try a little calf manna. I think its called horse manna now. If I ever have a picky eater or one that goes off of feed on the road the calf manna keeps them eating. I have also had good results with a little top dressed healthy coat. Hope she settles in soon |

Location: Wonderful Wyoming | I believe most horses get ulcers because a small % of people feed to reduce ulcers. Add that they may be young, in training or just sold/bought and moved to a new envirnment. I would vote for ulcers. I am sending a 7 yr old off for a refresher in March. I will automatically treat for ulcers when he returns home. It will save me money and down time in the long run, because we go right into the show season with stalling and traveling. |

I had that happen once. Had a halter filly that was getting tons of high fat feed and alfalfa and would just not gain weight. Had her scoped to check for ulcers and found tons of active parasites. Powerpack wormer fixed her and she started gaining almost immediately. |

What did the vet suggest to worm her with? and any follow up worming? I am curious about this as I know a horse that behaves same way, but is well cared for and wormed regularly. She may need to be scoped too. |

I bought a mare out of AR adn she was very wormy too. My vet recommended a Safeguard powder pack and it worked wonders. Don't forget scopes don't diagnose hind gut ulcers. |

| He worked her with moxidectin and recommended I hit her again with a double dose of fenbendazole (power pac). He said power pac doesnβt do bots, but will clean up the rest. Moxidectin (quest plus) will do bots though. |
