We have 2 that we keep in with the horses. One is pretty friendly and more of a pet and while the other one is friendly, he’s just more of a protector to the horses. I will say the older one that is more of the protector has definitely done a good job of keeping things away from the horses. He’s ran off coyotes and dogs several times. They have both been great buddies to the horses. I have a colt off the track that has mellowed out a bunch since he has a donkey buddy.

Last Catt - 2018-02-23 5:36 PM Curious if the mini donkeys have any issues with being attacked by coyotes? It sounds like they can defend themselves pretty well, and that has been my own concern with getting a mini horse, as we have had coyotes come in and grab chickens, I wouldn't put it past them to pester a mini. We've had more packs of coyotes in recent years, so it concerns me. We do have mountain lions occasionally, but I think they usually just keep moving if they do come past us, and would probably grab a neighboring dog than a mini with other horses. Asking because I'm looking to get a mini donkey as a companion as well, so I'll be following this thread.

Β A pack of coyotes will take down a mini. Β  I keep my minis Β up at nightΒ

I would not want to put a mini in this situation, get a full size donkey if you want a companion for your horse. I have coyotes and cats around here too, but my mini horse is with my horses and he gets put up every night with the others.

This is my concern about getting one. I don't have a barn, and the coyotes and cats could easily jump my panels. The mini would be with another horse, but I still wouldn't want anything to happen. Our livestock guardian dog is also getting up there in age and has difficulty guarding like he used to, we're hoping to get another pup here soon. Hoping to also get some wire up around my mare's corral that I'm hoping will be foaling next year in order to help protect the foal. We've never had issues with minis in the past (had some for a short time that were a friends), but we also had a young guardian dog at that time that wouldn't back down.

I dont have a barn either, the mini gos out with his two buddy's{full size horses} during the day and at night they get put into their pens so everybody gets fed, the mini is in a pen with his best friend so I really dont worry about him, the pens are panels with their sheds to get out of the weather if they need too, but never had any problems with the predators bothering him, I worry about the rattlesnakes and copperheads more then the coyotes and cats. If the mini your thinking about getting is with horses and they get put up at night I would not worry about him/she then..

The neighbor behind us has 3 mini's turned out on a few thousand acres with the cows and Clydesdale. (I'm not sure how/why they ended up with the horse lol ) They cruise all around and haven't fallen victim to coyotes yet. I think they've had them for 5-7 years now.
