I got a 5 inch freeze brand for my yearling. Looking at it up to her hip I feel that it is to big?!. I will get a picture up to her hip. Also if I brand her as a yearling will it grow with her and get bigger?

Yes, it will. You'll want to use a smaller brand for the youngsters.

I believe 3" is recommended for younger horses.

We use a 2 inch freeze brand on the horses and a 3 inch on the cattle. I brand the horses when they are long yearlings or 2 year olds. I don't like a big brand on my horses. (In fact I passed on a colt once that had a huge brand. ) Cattle we brand at 9 to 10 months old. Brand does grow as your animal does. Picture below is that 2 inch brand on a 5 year old gelding. He was branded when he was 2.

Great thanks for the information!! I had already gotten a 5 inch brand made up and didn't think about the brand getting bigger. ?? I am going to wait until next year when she turns 2 and see if the brand looks any better when she gets older.

My brand is 5". I prefer to brand as long yearlings/2 yo, but I have done a weanling with it. She's 2 now, but I havent seen her recently to see how it's looking. Unfortunately, my brand is very detailed, so I can't use a smaller brand. I had a 4" and I did a few horses and it didn't come out as clear as I would have liked.

Curious... how big is that brand now? I would love to see the brand up next to it.....    Mine were branded at yearling and I can't say the brands got any bigger

Its closer to the size of our 3 inch brand now. This gelding grew a ton from his 2 year old to 4 year old year and may not be a good representation. He is quite a big horse now. I would guess on my other horses the brand expanded about a 1/2 inch or so. Not nearly as tiny as the original brand.
