This is supposed to be in response to Wild1's post

I would definitely recommend having her ultrasounded to see if something is up. My husbands heel horse has always had horrible heat cycles, she has always been a nervous type so we always assumed her miserable personality was just her. But this winter she was in heat non-stop; would never go out - she was a hot mess. I finally convinced hubby to get her checked (as he really doesn't understand female reproductive pain! lol) and she had FIVE huge follicles on one ovary!! She also had a ton of edema and We gave her a short of Deslorelin and ultrasounded 3 days later and all large follicles had cleared and now has two healthy follicles forming on each ovary.
Amazing the difference in her personality already, shes not as nervous and jumpy and just seems MUCH happier - as you can imagine. We will be watching her closely now as if this becomes a recurring problem our next step will be to breed her or spay her.

One of my parents horses had issues like this. Needed to be checked every month.

I checked all 3 of my mares yesterday. 1 had several in there, 1 had 1 and the 3rd mare had none. Interesting and Ive never thought to check before. None of my mares got irritated with me. They just stood there like ok. But I also clean their udders regularly and the underside of their tails so they are used to me messing with them. My old mare had her tail broken by another mare a few years ago. She cant pick it up all the way so I clean under it and she enjoys. Spoiled much? LOL!!!

I wonder if a mare having a bean(s) could cause her not to stand still for breeding? We took a mare to get bred last summer the the stud's owner never had a mare bounce around like our mare during breeding. Finally had to use a calming paste to get her to stand. And yes she was in heat.

Yes mares get beans. They're located in their clitoral fossa. They are usually unimpressive in size and most mares really don't have much for beans, but occasionally there will be a decent sized one. They are mostly of concern when you are trying to breed mares, because if they aren't detected and removed they can contaminate the clean glove and AI pipette as the arm passes into the vagina, and they can be a source of chronic infection in mares that can't seem to get in foal. In the repro world they are no big deal, no mystery, common knowledge.

As far as behavior, honestly, that part is an unknown. I don't have an actual % but the vast majority of mares aren't ever checked for beans to begin with so we don't really know if any ill behavior is due to them like they are attributed to in geldings.

Also, I do recommend, IF you feel inclined to dig around your mare's clitoris looking for beans, please please please, especially if you want to breed her ever, please use clean hands and gloves and don't stick dirty barn fingers in that sacred area of reproduction. LOL

Yes, the only time I have ever seen one of these "beans" which we called a very unfortunately positioned black head or cyst, was a mare that was just having a hard time standing still for breeding. And once the stud was able to penetrate the mare let out a scream that could not be mistaken for anything other than pain.

Had her examined and sure enough there was this cyst kinda like cystic acne in a pore. And the hole stays once you remove the buildup. So you will want to check it.

This. Some mentioned on the original Facebook post about wearing gloves, then patting a dirty horse and moving a dirty tail, etc., THEN looking for beans. . . .
