Ed wright loop exercise
I read about this exercise in his book but I never seen him teach it at a clinic and i had been to many. Has anyone else? Any tips? Is it effect at a trot and lope as well? Is it always big circles, the loop as well as the barrel circles? Be great if someone has a video of this. Want to make I’m doing it right. Got one not finishing his turns.

He was teaching the loops when I first came to Texas and a few years later he stopped. Ed was always evolving and changed some of his drills etc. It was easy to pick out who had just come back from one of his clinics when a horse came running in the arena and looped the first barrel.

I'm not sure if this is what you are calling the loop drill, but he has a drill that helps you finish the turns that is a figure 8 after the barrel where you go around the barrel, then switch to the opposite direction and make a turn around an imaginary barrel
(~10 ft from the one you just turned & angled between the 2nd and 3rd
), then your original barrel and repeat until you get your horse to finishing it nicely. It's one of my favorites and also helps to get them switching leads from 1 to 2.

Do you mean the half around? He was teaching that when I first started going then quit, I asked him about it and he said that he quit using it because so many people mis-used the drill and then started complaining they were hitting barrels leaving the barrel. I was on young horses at the time so never actually was giving that drill and do not know how to use it or where to use it, LOL!!!

RE: Ed wright loop exercise
Yes I think we are talking about the same exercise
(the figure 8 w image nary barrel
)But i see, as it was explained above, I was doing it wrong.  Thanks for explaining.  Yes that’s they one, to get them to finish.  He definitely stressed in his book this exercise can B overdone.
/>To the first reply, this is not loops around the barrel, but an exercise to do to get your horse to finish a barrel. Â
Thanks to all of you for replying.
