Location: North of where I want to be | I am looking to relocate from Pennsylvania to North Carolina next year.
Looking at an hour out of Fayetteville (in anydirection) but will consider other areas. What is the cost of living like? What are the taxes like? Looking for good areas for horse activities etc.
I am in an industry that relies on Steel, GeoCivil contracting and infastructure to survive. |

Location: NC | We moved from NY/LI to NC a year and half ago. Just bought 6 acres in sept. About an hour from fayetteville and an hour from raleigh. We are 10 miles from I95 so can go north/south and 7 miles from I40. (it is a small town with a traffic circle but 20 min to a larger town with walmart/more resturants) Barrel races theres something every weekend (unless they get rained out which weve been having) Slowed down a tiny bit in dec but has picked back up. Taxes arent bad at all. We are still considered johnston county which is higher because it goes up to almost raleigh borders. Cost of living is alot more reasonable then up north. |

Location: Ohio girl moved to PA | I made the move from Ohio to NC in 2013. I went to Kings Mountain which is in cleveland county right on the NC/SC border, so im not too sure where you are looking near. I liked it, but it wasnt for me at that time. I was 23 and i got bored, werent too many barrel races near me either. Beautiful countryside though. i loved that aspect of it, but eventually moved back home. Cost were cheap. Now im getting ready to make the move into PA. |

Location: never in the right place | I know a few people that moved from Mass to NC and love it. one lives in Dunn off of I-95 and not sure where the other is but a little further north west. Lots of barrel races, seems like they are going all the time. If you have FB look up Valentine Farm- maybe she could give you info.
I see that Fayetteville is just down the road from Dunn. If you need to board I definately recommend Valentine Farm

Location: NC | Theres a bunch of races near by. Lumberton ag center has a bunch. There are da bomb shows theres, as well as nbha. Theres DC western which is prob about an hour and maybe half from Fayetteville. EZRun is another association nearby |

| I'm about 20-30 minutes north of Raleigh. Fayetteville is about 2 hours ish from us.
So, I've lived here 90% of my life (100% of my horse owning - adult life)
The further south you go from Raleigh, the more rural, the cheaper, the bigger pieces of acreage you can find. Fayetteville is very military - because of its proximity to Fort Bragg. Not much going on, but also not very safe, IMO. Though, these days, where is safe? But I digress. West of Raleigh (some parts of Durham, Chapel Hill, Hillsborough, Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, Morrisville are higher end areas because of Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, RTP (Research Triangle Park.--Amazon looked there for their HQ) These are EXPENSIVE, bought up by the high falutin' doctors, businessmen, technology people. You won't find land, and there's no room for barrel racing.
Benson/Dunn/Four Oaks/Clayton/Angier are all good middle areas that are country, where you will find more cheap land, but you won't be very close to a metropolis if you want a mall or high end grocery stores close by. Clayton is a wannabe (up and coming) Raleigh, so that's the snooty part of the country/hillbilly towns.
As far as barrel races go, that Benson area is a good middle ground for getting to all the races quickly. You are convenient to 95 and 40 to get you north and south, and to quickly get to 64 to go east to the big complex in Williamston. Nicest facility in the state, IMO.
There are many associations that host shows, and most of the facilities are in Benson, Lumberton (covered pen), Raleigh, and Williamston.
There is a smaller association (not national like NBHA, but still has good sized shows) in Goldsboro. Show from early March to late November usually. NBHA shows Feb/March to November. State finals are usually June, last year was August. The state finals are in one of 3 places. Arden (or Fletcher) (WAAYYYYYY west near Asheville, usually small turn out), Raleigh at the state Fairgrounds, or in Williamston at the Senator Bob Martin Ag Center. I believe in 2018 they will be in Williamston.
If you are into rodeos, there is a series that runs in Raleigh called Carousel farms - runs every Tuesday (weather permitting) from May to Labor Day, then has 2-3 other shows on Friday/Saturday nights at other times through fall/winter at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh. There are some girls around here that haul to rodeos, but I'm not very familiar with that scene.

That helps tremendously.
I don't mind living a bit of a drive from where I work as I have to travel for work anyhow. It does help to know what areas to stay away from and what areas are more to suit the way I live. As of Right now I live an hour north of Pittsburgh PA ( where my office is located, smack in the city) I travel NY, OH, WV, MD, and all of PA for work.

| No problem! I really love it here. I think we have a great hodge podge and anyone can find some place they love. We are fairly central, but the whole state is only about 6 hours from end to end. Being central, we are only a couple hours from the mountains, and a couple from the beach. I, myself, hate the beach, so I head west. We have just about every season, sometimes all in the same week.
We have a mild temperature from April-November/December. Then after that its all over. We've had Christmas day's where it was 65 degrees and I wore a Tshirt to Christmas dinner, and then was bundled up by New Years Eve. So be prepared for fluctuations. Mostly late June to September are the hottest, typically 85-90+. We did have a year where we were in the 90's for over 2 weeks. And that's a HUMID 90, that feels like 115. That's my biggest complaint is the heat/humidity.

| I'm in Robbins, NC which is about an hour from Fayetteville! We put on the Da Bomb Barrel Racing series and all of our shows have $1000 added and would be within a 2 hour radius of you (for the most part). We average 180 in the Open and around 50 youth for our one day shows with a daily payout of $7,500 or more. Our finale had $10,000 added last year and $35 fees. There's one show a month and you only have to run at shows in a year to qualify for the finale! We've paid out over $150k in 2 years. (sorry for tooting our horn ha)
Also look into DC Western PBRA - they have a great series in Goldsboro, NC (maybe an hour-ish from Fayetteville) that pays well, has great prizes, and a good finals.
NBHA is somewhat popular in the area (not like it used to be but folks still go) and Fayetteville would be the NC02 and NC04 area.
December thru February can be somewhat scarce as far as availability of shows, but March thru November it gets cranked up pretty good. We have a local magazine (CBHNews) that keeps a detailed schedule of all the shows. Right now there's literally a show with $1,000 or more added EVERY weekend within an hour and a half of me in Robbins, NC.
As far as cost of living is concerned, the Pinehurst/Southern Pines area is quite pricey (Equestrian and golf country), but go somewhat North or West to my area and living is much cheaper out in the country. Right now I know of a nice starter farm with 15+ acres, a mobile home, and a gutted stick built home for reno for $188k :)
