I know nothing about freeze brands and my colt was brandes 3 days before coming home. (That was 6 weeks ago) how do you take care of it? Half of it scabbed over and the scabbing flaked off the other day. He has pink skin ans no hair underneath...is this normal? Why did only half peel off? Why is the hair not growing in yet?

Sounds like it was held on a little too long maybe, but chances are good it will still fill in white. It takes a long time for the hair to grow back, a long long time. I don't mess with my brands but I have rarely had one scab unless the vet uses liquid nitrogen and leaves on too long. They heal fine. I have used scarlet oil per a vets advice back when we hot ironed years ago.

It’s normal for it to scab and peel and leave pink skin. The part that peeled will start having white fuzz start to grow in about a month or so. If there is part of the brand that did NOt peel, that part of the brand probably didn’t take and you will have half a brand. I always use nitrogen with mine. Then you know how cold it is. The dry ice alcohol method is very inconsistent.

I think when it is all said and done it will be all the same white hair, It's not uncommon for part of a brand to peel more than the rest but they end up looking like they should. I had a vet leave liq nit on way too long and the whole brand scabbed and peeled. We just figured it would look like a hot brand, but white hair came in and it turned out to be a great brand.

Don't panic.  It can take 90 days in some before white hair comes in.  Do nothing to treat it.  Just leave it all alone.  This is speaking from experience of branding over 3000 head of horses over the years.  And if it's flaking, that's a good sign.

Ditto. Leave it alone. Don't do anything and don't put anything on it. Just give it time. You will most likely see a nice white brand in about 3 months time.

I wouldn't worry too much.  Let it scab and peel off.  We don't doctor ours, just let them heal.  This brand scabbed over and peeled as well and turned out fine.  Even visible in full winter fluff. It does take several months for the hair to grow back in, so keep that in mind.

If he's greying out you likely won't be able to see it eventually. Whether it grows in white, or no hair grows back in, most are hard to see on a grey horse.
