| Our head horse last weekend was acting terrible and very out of the norm. He’s a solid high numbered head horse and great with kids. Last weekend you would have thought he was an unbroke donkey! He would come out of the box great but buck or dive left when trying to dally. His urine was dark and smelled strong of ammonia. Also, his back was pretty sore above the kidney area... we figured kidney issues so off to the vet we go. Pulled blood and urine sample. Blood work check out fine but urine sample came back reflecting an UTI (kidney and liver are normal). We go into the vet office tomorrow to actually pick up the reports.
Anyone deal with a UTI in a gelding?
We were told to treat with SMZ tabs but wasn’t sure if he would need a maintenance supplement long term. |

Location: 31 lengths farms | Id look into ENC Silver Lining herbs. I have a mare that has kidney stones, she also had a bladder stone. Had bladder stone removed, she started battling UTI's about a year and a half ago. I put her on Zesterra, has collidial silver in it, and knock on wood she hasn't had another bladder infection since. |

| We are looking into SLH for sure. Vet wants us to do antibiotics first so figured I would follow his protocol before adding supplements. I still feel there must be an underlying issue for a gelding to get a UTI.
I picked up the blood and urinalysis. Most levels are normal except:
- Blood Test:
Globulin is low at 2.1 (Normal range is 2.2 - 5.6)
Potassium is high at 4.8 (Normal range is 2.4 - 4.7)
-Urinalysis:
Specific Gravity is low at 1.008 (Normal range is 1.020 - 1.050)

Saturday his urine was dark and smelled of strong ammonia. I’ve never had a horse tie-up, so after looking at symptoms they seem very similar expect he would walk and move (I read they tend to be hesitant). He wasn’t hesitant until they were actually roping. His urine was normal when we collected a urine sample on Thursday. |

Location: 31 lengths farms | My mare had to do a round of Excede and then when the UTI still came back a few days after the last dose we did several rounds of SMZ's . It would clear up and then get murky and nasty again, the good thing with a mare is that we could scope the bladder, bladder walls were clean and no stone present. The vet that did the bladder stone removal thought we may just be at the stage that she was going to need to be on maintenance dose of antibiotics... I went to the Zesstera hoping to keep the antibiotics from having to be a daily thing.
Have you given him any electrolytes or new grass hay that may have been super high in sugars? |

We have not gave any electrolytes and feed alfalfa, but did recently change from Total Equine to Purina Ultium because the NSC is lower in Ultium. |

| I had one with a UTI and it was because of beans. That is when I learned how to clean his sheath PROPERLY. |

Interesting! We did just get his teeth floated and our vet cleans sheaths while they are sedated. He did have some build up, not sure if that’s technically a bean or not |

After looking into it the build up was outside on the sheath....not inside. To answer you I somewhat assumed what a bean was, but thanks to google search I am now educated. Lol.
