Double J has one they call their standard tree. |

It doesn't take a big gullet to fit a wider horse, changing the angle of the bars will work better. I see a ton of saddles for sale with a tope measure held to them measuring the gullet...but you CANNOT accurately measure the gullet of a tree once a saddle is built on it. YOu have to measure the raw tree. I think a lot of the gullet sizes being advertised on used saddles are wrong.
eta - I would bet the gullet in their standard tree is 6-1/2 or 6-3/4. That sounds correct.

I spoke with Double J yesterday
The 6.5" is the standard pozzi gullet - the angle of the bars makes it seem wider than that though
They also make a Pozzi narrow and wide and I think they vary by 1/4" |

Wayyyyyyyyyy too many people (including some saddle makers) get hung up on gullet width. The top of the wither isn't 9 or 10" broad.....It's mostly about bar angle. Not saying that no horse needs that wide a gullet, by any means......but if the bar angle is right for THAT horse, you don't need a super wide gullet.
It's 99% about the bar angle, NOT gullet width. And like she said, the gullet can NOT be accurately measured once the saddle is built. But when selling a saddle I always include a photo of the gullet "measurement" for people who don't know any different or insist that it's accurate.
And no, gullet width has zero to do with tree size.

You're in great shape then. They've got so many really pretty ones, its gonna be tough to pick a design. I know the 6.5 sounds small after some of the saddle discussions on here, but it really isn't. Its a standard gullet. I bet you love your new saddle. |

You are mosty right, but crown c or Martin's philosophy is different hence the wide gullet, as they place their saddles behind the shoulder near the widest part.
Most other saddle makers place the saddle on the wither, (placement of the rigging determines where the saddle should sit) and this is where the angle of the bars is more important then the gullet size.
Problem with the angle of the bars is there is not a standard measurement for this either. Double j measures one side of the bar so 42-45 I believe are their angles.
The Lisa Lockhart wide fit saddle is a 120 degree
To the op, it is best that you contact double j and speak to someone direct this way you are not getting any misinformation. |

| So does Double J's "standard/regular" with the 6.5 gullet have the same angle/degree bars as the "wide" with 7 gullet? I was told by Double J today that the Standard Wide tree of the Pozzi Pro has 43* degree bars and the only difference between the two is the gullet size.
I am having an issue with my Pozzi Pro wide being too wide in the withers, but seems to fit ok through the back. I was told that it looked like I needed a regular/standard tree but when I had my mare fitted the bare standard tree they set on her looked too narrow (so I was told). |
