I am looking at getting a Martin Crown C(or another martin barrel saddle) because I need a smaller seat. Anyway, how do they ride? Like the positition they put you in is comparable to what? I have owned a double j lynn McKenzie and an older CJ cactus and I like the way both of them seat me, but I need something a little deeper too. What model would you recommend besides the crown c?(BTR,FX3)

I'm a Double J person, but I have rode in the Crown C and the FX. I disliked both of them. The crown c doesn't sit bad but it pushes you forward. The cantle isn't dished out like the double js are. I hated the FX...it has a really wide ground seat and a lower cantle. I dislike saddles that are wide in the seat. I've only sat in a BTR, but its what I would try out of the 3 personally.

All of them will sit you different IMO - Crown C, FX3, BTR, Stingray, the new Lisa Lockhart one...

Finding a dealer with many styles in stock would be a good idea...

This is the information on each type of saddle from their site.  I think trying one at an event or dealer might be good.  I know they offer test rides at many events.   I haven't ever ridden one on a horse, but sat in a Stingray on a saddle stand and loved how it felt.  I would like to try it on a horse.  I just had a custom saddle made for my mare, or I would definitely be interested in trying the Stingray or Lisa.
FX3 Barrel Racer
The FX3 is a revolutionary saddle built with the aggressive racer in mind. The secure seat, higher swell, and forward-hung fenders give the rider security to sit deep on the pockets, and hold the feet forward while riding a shorter stirrup. This gives added control on the most athletic and hard-turning horses.
Cervi Crown C
Sherry Cervi teamed up with Martin Saddlery to design the Crown C Barrel Racer. The Crown C’s specific design helps barrel racers maintain proper body position and stability during a run. It employs attributes that aid barrel racers in absorbing those quick jarring movements common with today’s faster, more athletic barrel horses. When championships are determined by hundredths of a second, the Crown C gives riders a competitive advantage that truly makes a difference in their performance.
B*T*R
BTR is a refined saddle designed to give the rider security without restriction. With streamlined, forward fenders that move freely and a flatter seat, the rider is able to adjust quickly from the drop to acceleration. The swell and horn are designed to help maintain position without interference.

Guardian
The new Guardian barrel saddle provides superior security, made with youth riders in mind, but it's for adults too. It’s designed to give the rider a secure seat, combined with a substantial swell and leg cut out. Forward rigged fenders feature the patented SPRS (Stirrup positioning Rig Slot) that holds fenders in a forward position and offers resistance, keeping the rider in the seat pocket. The horn is designed with a forward angle to help maintain position without interference.
Stingray
Introducing the latest addition to the Sherry Cervi Signature Series, the Stingray is made for the rider who prefers a reasonably vertical ride but secure deep seat in training, exercise, and fierce competition. This saddle helps prevent the rider from getting thrown over the front and out of balance. By keeping the hips and knees at ergonomically correct angles at the slower stages of the horse’s gate and letting you sit deeper at high rates of speed, it keeps you on the cantle and behind the jerk of the horse’s stride or stop. This saddle is different than any saddle you’ve tried before, boosting confidence and improving performance.

Fearless
Fearless by Lisa Lockhart Highest money winner of the decade. 11x NFR Qualifier, 4x Canadian Champion, and 2x RFD-TV’s The American Champion, Lisa Lockhart is a legend in professional barrel racing. Lisa’s new saddle, Fearless, by Martin elevates innovation and features quality at its finest. The pliable bar tree has been Lisa’s long term preference for keeping horses sound. Her seat offers a balanced ride, so you can ‘Be Fearless’. Hermann Oak Leather and 100% real sheepskin wool.

Try the Jeff Smith C3, or another Double J, as they have deep seats.

I love the FX3, but when I first tried it i hated it. I had to ride it for a week before I figured out how to ride in it. I had a Crown C and it worked on one horse I had, but the seat was just too roomy and i was getting thrown around when I started running my cutting bred mare. Moved to the FX3 and it holds me in and lets me stay up and aggressive without having to worry about getting thrown over the front when she makes her move. If I need to sit deep it puts me where I want to be. I ended up buying a second for my big horse because it makes me feel secure and holds me in. I think it really ends up depending on your style and your horse's style and how they work together. What works for one, may not for the other. Try as many as you can before you buy.

Love my Martin Crown C. For me - I feel like I'm sitting down in the saddle and not just on top - which gave me a ton of confidence.

I went from a 13.5" Crown C 8" Gullet to a 14" BTR 7" Gullet and I absolutely love it! I felt stuck in my Crown C, like slouched down and lost in my turns and couldnt get up on my horse. I felt like I couldnt move my legs if I needed to. I was struggling with it rolling on my horse and it overall just didnt work for me and my DTF gelding. I had him fit and the BTR works and fits amazing even going up to a 14". I feel secure in my turns, I can stay center and get up out of the turn easily. I feel like I can move my legs freely and quickly.

I will say I had a hard time finding a used BTR so I bought brand new. The first couple rides I felt like my legs were in front of me and then after a few rides they rocked back and are now underneath me where I like them. I almost felt like I had to learn how to re-ride after riding in a Crown C and feeling so stuck.

Martin's are excellent leather and quality no matter what you get! This is just my experience for me and my horse.
