Do you think it’s ok to change a horse’s barn name if you don’t like it? What if a horse comes with a really silly barn name and you prefer a more serious name or vice versa? Are you offended if someone changes the barn name of a horse you named after they bought it?

Your horse, your name. Their horse their name.

I completely agree with streakysox! I am looking at a horse this upcoming weekend, and I don't care for his barn name. If I buy him, I already have his barn name picked out

Don't see why not. I did when we got our mare. She didn't seem to care.

Yeah, I change barn names all the time. Some of ours don't come with barn names either (broodies usually). We usually go for something simple.

Yes I do think it's ok . I've done it with 2 . The first is my gelding that I've owned for 14 years. I didn't intend on the change but it just kinda happened and the other I just didn't like his name .

Well, there is one thing to consider here. Bad juju. I was always told it was really bad luck to change a barn name. Lol. But who knows. Probably no issues at all

I've definitely changed them. I know a lady who bought a horse and she posted about him on Facebook and accidentally spelled his name wrong and the previous owner commented "His name is spelled xyz". Sorry, if you sell a horse, you relinquish control over what happens to it, including the name being changed.
Name the horse whatever you want!

I thought it was only bad luck if you changed the registered name??

I've heard this too...So I've never totally changed their name. I've owned two Zip's at the same time. One was Mr. and the other Mrs. Rick's common name I can't type on here but it rhymes LOL. Or Ricardo when he's in trouble.
Tucker became Tuck - or when he's not being real smart I call him Space Cadet. His can turn to an array of things but he's never THAT bad unlike Rick.

I’ve never changed a name just because none of mine have came with cringe worthy names.

My recent yearling is the first horse I’ve ever gotten to name. When I asked what they called him they said they weren’t going to tell me so that I could pick it myself

Thanks all. Think I’m going change it. I just can’t get behind it and if it’s my main horse I should like the name! :)

I don't normally change barn names but have on a couple.  I changed one from Stormy to Snoopy and the current one I have.  He was named by his previous owner (who was a teenager).  She called him Cloud..I changed it to Boudreaux.  Seams to fit.

I changed a registered name on one horse, best decision I ever made. She turned into a fantastic horse, and I would cringe if I had had to show her under her terrible original registered name.

I also bought a mini last December and he was named Junior. We changed his name to Teddy. I think he's grateful to forget his past.
