So me and my friend found out my horse does best on the pattern when he's able to run past the barrel about a stride or two, then he really uses his hind end to push him around and back. I've never had a horse work with this style, so any help on myself to get him a little past the barrel before asking to turn? He's a big horse so it makes sense. He's in the middle of ratey and free running.

Pick a spot on the fence and ride two handed to it

Stay two-handed until his shoulder or butt are beside the barrel.

Anyone else? I put up some tire markers to make sure I'm getting him past the barrel without pushing him, and that helped a good amount for me visually.

My old horse was like this. Even though he was a big boy (16.1 hands), he was a ratey sucker. I would stay two handed as long as possible, and as I was coming up to the barrel, I would look at the spot on the ground where I needed to get him to before turning. Then I focused on that spot and drove, drove, drove, until we got to it. Then I "let him go" and let him do his thing around the turn.

Quit pumping your arms. Body. To many signals. Those that rate more than others are cowing the barrel more. More you move, reins boince, body moves. More they rate. Make sure horse is not over bitted. I see that a lot, more than you might think. Especially with sliding mouth piece with long purchase.
