| Found a horse that I really like. Not getting my hopes up, but going to do a pre purchase exam tomorrow. I got a quote from a new vet, I said I wanted to at least take an x ray of front feet and hocks. $720 for the x rays, $275 exam and $65 trip fee. I was a little scared on the $720 for x rays..thoughts? If it's normal, let me know. It's been a long time since I've done a pre purchase.

Location: IL | Oh my, I've paid around $300 for prepurchase on 2 different horses in totally different states. I did not get xrays but that seems pretty high. My vet charges $40 a film. | |

I'm not complaining, just thought it was a lot of x rays. My current vet did front feet x rays on my gelding and only had to take one..I'm new to this so I'm trying to ask a lot of questions | |

My last horse I bought we xrayed everything, feet, hocks, stifles, I don’t remember how many X-rays but there were a lot, I think it was $800 total. I wanted films of everything to have a baseline for future changes if any knowing I plan on having this horse for many, many years. My vet has never taken 4 films of feet or hocks, it is usually just 2, a lateral and one from the front. | |

The large surgical referral center I worked for charged $45 per view on the X-rays but would cap it off at about $600-800. I live in a more rural area and charge $25 per view.
I would NOT scimp on the foot xrays- you definitely want to take views of the navicular bone to be sure there are no changes there. BUT, where you could cut back is the hock radiographs. I can get a good idea of the health of the hocks with 2 views, and if I see any concerns in those views I will recommend taking more.
A good rule of thumb is to spend 10% of the purchase price of the horse on your PPE. | |

Thank you! This is not a large surgical center or anything. They charge the same rate as my vet, $45 per slide, I just didn't realize it was 4 shots for each hock, and 4 for each foot. The purchase price is $6,500, so the 10% you mentioned is where originally I thought it would cost, $650.00. I have never met this vet before, but I have heard good things.

I've never met this vet! I think they use digital. She is from a high class area a little over an hour from me, but she was recommended and the only one that could do it tomorrow, everyone else was over a week away to get an appt. If it goes well, which I hope it does, I will post pictures. | |

Agree, I can’t tell you how many times my vet will say I am taking some more but not charging you. Keep in mind though, I have been going to this clinic for 15 years and have a great relationship with them -love my vet.
I have never been to a vet that had a prepurchase package so to speak, not that it is a bad idea, but again my prepurchases except for one, have all been with vets I was currently using. My train of thought wad I wanted to do the basic films and if something led us to do more then more would be taken. Good luck with your new guy, it does sound like they are offering you a very thorough vet check. | |

I would use my regular vet, but she can't as the ranch who is selling this horse, is a client of the vet practice also. I wish she could do the pre purchase, but she referred me to this clinic who they share on calls with. I'm lucky I'm potentially getting another horse! With all the heartache, headache, and $ invested in my other gelding, we said we can't buy a new horse every 9 months.. | |

| Update: Horse did not work out, and I'm pretty sad. He was a grade 3 lame on his right hind, for flexion tests and on the lunge line. He has a great personality, it's a shame. Vet was great, she said for what I wanted to do with him, we would have to start out this purchase with hock injections and or stifle injections and that's not something I'm willing to do RIGHT off the bat. I will keep looking I guess. We did not do x-rays. | |

At least now you know beforehand, and did not have to spend a bundle of money to find that out. It sounds like she is a good vet that is willing to be honest with you and work in your best interests. I hope you find a good one soon! Don't give up! | |

So sorry, it can be heartbreaking trying to find the right horse. We had to say no to a few that were very hard to walk away from. The right one is out there, be patient. | |

It's a huge bummer for sure. The last horse I went to look at was everything I was looking for. Well he was a yearling, so was what I was looking for in a prospect, lol. Anyways, I drove an hour and a half with a trailer and cash, and when we got there, the guy called them up from the pasture and he was limping pretty bad on his back leg. The guy put him in the round pen to work him a little, and while he did improve, I wasn't willing to take the chance. I hadn't arranged for any kind of pre-purchase exam, so I left empty-handed. I was pretty bummed. | |

| I'm VERY bummed! He is exactly what I'm looking for. I'm just discouraged. I had cash in hand and brought my trailer. Last week I drove 20 min from the Canadian border to look at one, and it was bad. I left after 15 min. Also last week my trainer and I drove 3 hrs to look at a horse, and was not for me. I'm happy that my trainer goes with me. There's not a lot of horses near me to try. The place I went to today, they go out to TX, OK and brings back a trailer full of horses a couple times a month. My trainer bought one of her horses there, and a lot of her clients have bought horses there. | |
