| Hi All!
It's been quite a long time since I last posted on here, but I have a couple of questions for everyone...I'm getting back into rodeo after being away for a few years (stepped away to develop a career). Anyhow, I'm just curious, what are the most common errors you all see in runs and what irks/irritates you the most in terms of what others do when they ride? I don't want to pick anyone apart or be rude/pompous; I just learn well by being critiqued myself and watching others being critiqued... |

The most common problem I see if people starting the turn too early, especially on the second barrel. It causes the horses to go wide and lose time on the back side, then be out of position to drive off the barrel and leave for the next barrel.
Too wide (rainbow or arc type) approach to the first barrel. Costs time, outs your horseβs shoulder in and rear end out. Horse is not in position to use himself, plus it takes A LOT of time to use all that extra ground.
What irks me about how others ride ? Nothing. Iβm in charge if me, no one else :-) |

| I think the 2 most common errors I see is taking that inside hand way over across the neck or tipping the nose way to the outside causing the shoulder to push into the barrel.
Im not bothered by other people so long as the horse is fed and healthy. Each their own and everybody has their own programs that I don't have to agree with but I still respect them. |

| People with fast or heavy hands kind of drives me bonkers. Jerk, pull, this way, now that way. Run them into the pocket then crank their head off to get them to turn. Obviously, it's also a training issue. Gah! It makes me feel sorry for the horse. |

| I think my biggest thing is seeing riders get in the way. Know when to let the horse work, be aware of how your riding ability could be impeding your horses run, and don't blame the horse for mistakes. The horn is there for us to use. Doesn't imply we don't know how to ride but a tool to make sure we are staying out of the horses way. I see a few girls at every race ride two handed around the barrel and it never fails, they are in the horses mouth leaving the barrel.

Ditto!! Heavy hands is my biggest peeve. My second would be on the training side of things- seeing people patterning a 2/3 year old and teaching them to run right at the barrel. Then they wonder why the horse begins the turn too soon, shoulders, ducks a barrel, back end swings out, or falls into the turn (by that I mean- the back end isnt engaged & their front end falls into the barrrel). Maybe it works for some?....to each their own! |

Too add to this, people who whip when they still need to be working on balance. So many times I see people whipping when all they are doing is slowing their horse down because the hand with the reins comes up and they are pulling on the mouth as they lean back to whip.

| Slicing first is the most common thing I see.
Pulling the nose to the outside. Just because Stevi can do it and make it work, that doesnβt mean it should be the new trend that itβs become. |

| Lack of foundation.
People not understanding what rate is
People unable to collect a horse
People blaming the horse when 99 percent of the time it is rider error
People unable to identify their horses are hurting and keep running them into the ground
People continually looking for the bit to miraculsly fix all their problems. |

| Horse that aren't broke and rider thinks they are. If you don't have control of your horse every step. Your horse is not broke. You won't have to worry about hitting barrels if you are doing the driving. |

I have been having this exact problem lately on the second barrel.... Do you have any tips on how to help fix this? |

Location: Pacific Northwest | Trying to hold a horse off the barrel if theyβre prone to shouldering it. Most of the time that just makes them dive harder.
People who kick so hard you can literally hear them thumping against the side of the horse. I donβt care what anyone says, kicking that hard is not going to make your horse go faster. |

Iβm doing videos Friday and will do a short segment on an exercise to help with starting the turn too early. Will post the video on this thread. |

Location: Loco,Ok | Β Not asking forlp before it's to late. No matter who we are. A good mentor as call it now is important. Sharp ideas over sharp spurs. It seems most getting started in barrels think its go fast and it's easy. Horsemanship is developed over years not months. Best hands in the world still learn every day. Cutters have trainer clinics. Why not barrel racers. Old hands are looked up to for advice. Even if they don't ride anymore. I go to cutters I know for help when I run into a problem. Just a thought.
