I recently was given a little mare that has a sore knee.  She had surgery about 3 years ago to remove a bone spur. They gave her adequan for a couple years and decided to stop running her.  She's a nice little mare that I'd like to make comfortable for the kids to ride around on.  I rode her the other evening and she's fine at a walk but limps at a trot.  Any ideas?

I'd get her xrayed again to check and make sure there are no chips or new bone proliferations, pull any excess fluid off, and inject with some depo THEN keep her on previcox for riding...take her off of it when not riding.

Have you or anybody else used previcox? How does it work?

I had to retire my old mare at 10 for a bone chip in her knee. We honestly kept her comfortable with bute. She actually lived on it in her later years. I'd just give her some bute or previcox is also a good idea.

Previcox - you just give 1/4 to 1/2 of a big pill. Just put it in your hand with a pinch of grain and they will eat it and never even know it. I've had some be dead lame from a bruised foot and be dramatically better the next day. I think its slower acting than bute so probably better to give the day before. Bute you can give 4 hours out and it usually works.

Definitely consider having your veterinarian inject the joint that was affected. New radiographs would help guide treatment as well- I have a lot of clients with older arthritic knee horses that I can keep very comfortable with once a year joint injections.

Get a bottle of DMSO. Add 10cc of Dex to the bottle. Paint on the knee all the way around. Cheap and it might work.
Also, I agree with the Previcox. It comes in little pills that you can give them with a handful of grain. Not as hard on the stomach as bute.

I would start with an x-ray and go from there based on what the vet sees and recommends. My retired gelding is off of previcox now, as it didn't do much for him. Every horse is different, and it just didn't do anything. He is on bute-less pellets now, and surprisingly is getting around nicely. The previcox takes awhile to get in their system, my vet says it takes about a week to see results. Previcox is not something you would give here and there, as it needs to get in their system.

We have good luck with Previcox; we give it to our semi retired mare when she's sore in her back leg. In the winter she can get sore and stiff and during that time we give it to her. (Have also given it to my OLD guy for his arthritis and generally see a difference in one to two days. . . )
