There was a very nice truck and trailer rig on the highway “rolling coal” but I have always been under the impression that keeping a truck stock is better for towing a trailer full of horses because of the fumes when you start messing with exhaust and emissions. Not to mention the added torque from a tuner causing more wear on your transmission. But that’s the extent of my knowledge about it. I would love if someone with more knowledge could enlighten me!

Depends on the make and year of the truck.

You can get custom "tow tunes" for your specific truck and the weight youre pulling that will up the power a little and make the truck shift better.

I dont think its needed on any of the newer model diesels though.

If you start chipping and messing with horse power you will run the risk of pre mature transmission failure, head gasket failure, etc. other parts of the engine need to be beefed up as well.

Our 3/4 ton is chipped, our tonner dually is not.

It all depends on who does it, a good diesel mechanic should know how to get you what you need and what other parts may need to be upgraded.

Our chipped truck will flat fly with a 20’ stock trailer and 6 head on board. My husbands put over 100k miles on it with no issues. I could not tell you what other upgrades were done when it was chipped. I know the kid he bought it off of had it set up to “roll coal” and they tuned it down. He also has beet fuel efficiency.

We plan to have the dually deleted and tuned. We will find the floor board when going up hills with the LQ on. Our mechanic and his brother specialize in diesel performance.

All I know about them is they can void your warranty if you still have a warranty on the truck. I can imagine needing any more pull than what I have with my Dodge 3500 Cummins but maybe I could squeal the tires with a chip!
