| Anyone have a 1D rodeo horse with kissing spines? Can they have a long term career and stay competitive? What do you do for maintenance? |

| Develop an excellent exercise program designed to keep their back strong. I have no experience with surgery or injections but have seen one come back from a fairly serious case with just exercise. |

| I want to say I’ve seen on here that Tiany’s horse Show Mance has surgery for it.
We have a head horse with it that we injected about a year ago. He responded beautifully and we have an appt in 2 weeks to get him reinjected. He’s just starting to show some mild symptoms that we think are signs that he’s getting uncomfortable again, like camping out and having trouble holding his hind legs for the trimmer. |

I thought it was Dash ta jones? Correct me if I’m wrong. My rodeo horse had 6 places operated on and came back running 1/2D in central Texas and is still going strong two years later and at 15yo. |

I wasn’t sure so I ran a quick search and show mance kept coming up, but Im just going off of what’s been said on here.
Keep in mind OP it is horse dependent. There are a lot of success stories and there are now 2 surgical choices, the “old” way where they actually cut off the spinal processes to make room, and a newer ligament release surgery - our large animal hospital at the university here does that one as an outpatient procedure for right around $1000. Considering what injections run it wouldn’t take long to justify that cost wise. I have heard of horses who haven’t come back to a full potential too, so it just depends.

| I talked to Tiany about this at the NFR and she has had multiple horses get the surgery.
I have maintained a mild case with exercise and lots of little tricks. |

Location: Texas | I have had a couple that had a kissing lesion or two. I did back injections on them and did not have to pursue surgery.
It also depends on how clinically significant the KS is. There are a lot of horses with abnormal backs that do not palpate sore and are apparently unaffected by it. Then you have the other spectrum where a horse really doesn't have anything exciting on rads and they are super painful in their backs.. so I try to rule everything else out that could be causing a lack of performance and if the only thing left that's a possible explanation is the back, then I try injections. If the injections work and last a year or more, then I call that a success. If they work but don't last long, then surgery comes up in the discussion.
I had a personal horse that to my knowledge never showed me any back pain anywhere, but the potential buyer wanted back rads so I took them and we found a spot that touched. She bought her with a slight price break and hasn't had to manage it yet at all. |

Location: Texas | I have 2 that have KS. My 14 yo 1D local gelding has it and it's maintained by injections. Once I found out that was what was causing him to be inconsistent in his runs I changed his routine during the week. He gets ponied during the week and only rode at the barrel race. This helps the injections last longer and he stays more comfortable. My 4 yo had 2 places touching and I opted for surgery on him. I felt like it was a cheaper route than consistently getting him injected at his age. I did get him injected first to ensure that was the root of his problems. He responded great to the injections and I knew it was his KS that was bothering him. |
