My mare likes to cut back on the second barrel super hard to turn towards the 3rd. I feel we come in nicely to start our second barrel then but she turns so hard to head to the third we tend to knock the second barrel coming out of it. Advice please?
ETA- she is so soft I’m easily able to pull her off of the second but its not done super smoothly and we are clearly losing time.

I have a colt that is wanting to do the same thing now that he’s getting the hang of things - I love (sarcastically) the stage where they think they know it all...

He will try to drop his shoulder and cut into the barrel coming in first. I always give him the chance to do it right, but as soon as I feel that should start to go, we stop. Back a couple steps, counter arc away from the barrel, and then come back around it twice, correctly - if he won’t give it to me correctly, we stop and start over. Often at this point we won’t continue on the 3rd but I’ll go back around 1st and give him the chance to work 2nd again, correctly. I don’t want to just ride in with more inside leg, or lift etc - I want him to learn to turn it correctly. Now that he’s standing up better coming in, he’ll try and cut at about the 3/4 point.

The same type of exercise could be applied on the backside - as soon as you feel her start to cut, stop her. Don’t let her continue on incorrectly. Stop, stand her back up, and make her do it right. You might find the first couple times she can’t go more than a couple steps before she starts to cut in again, that’s ok - it might take a while.

Keep her front feet moving. A lot of trouble in the turns start when the front feet stall out and the hips have no where to go.

Try to push her a stride deeper before you start your turn.  Usually if you catch it coming out, they just started  a smidge too soon and "run out of room" by the time they get around it. If they set that hind leg too soon on the backside, then you'll catch the barrel leaving.

So don't think of "keeping her off the barrel". Think about pushing her one stride deeper than you think you need to, so she has room when she comes around.

I agree with this too if you don’t feel like she’s dropping. I will catch the first coming out if our pocket is too big.

Ride her straighter, longer and emphasize a more "square" turn in your slow work. It's not real easy to see in this video but the pattern work is for that type of horse. Especially at the 2nd barrel (in slow work) the horse needs to be taken by the barrel, make a corner, go about even with the barrel, make a 45 degree angle, til his head is past the barrel, then finish the turn and aim straight towards the pocket to the third barrel.
