| Are oats inherently bad? Tried searching but search isn't wanting to work for me. Has anyone had success with them? |

| I got a bag of Producer's Pride whole oats from TSC, but they had a fair amount of debris in them. Switching to TC Naturals. TC is safe, right? |

Location: West Texas | Yes, whole oats are great. We use them in our two most popular feed formulas.

| I cant feed oats, the chickens literally attack the horses and then follow them around all day waiting for it, which is fine in the pasture but then they wreck my stalls scratching thru the manure to get to the leftover oats. I gave up on oats a while ago. |

| I feed oats to all 20 of mine. I make my own feed up and they get 1.5 lbs of oats in that mix a day. We always fed oats to the race horses with good results. I just try to keep the feeding under 2 lbs per feeding and right now the mix I use my total ration is only 3 lbs a day. |

Location: Willows, CA | If you need additional starch in your horses diet, I think that oats are about the best way to put it there. I do think it is vital not to feed more than one pound per feeding, and not to have additional high starch feeds added in addition to that one pound. If you feed oats at a higher amount than that, you need to split the total into as many feedings as needed to stay at that one pound per feeding rate. Horses simply lack the ability to make the enzyme that breaks down starch and sugars high in the small intestine in amounts that can process more than about one pound of grain at a time.
Compared to other grains and all grain mixes, oats are easier to evaluate for cleanness and quality. As long as you don't feed too much, oats are an acceptable energy generator in a horse diet. |

| I occasionally give a cup to my older horse for some added fiber. I get it from the Orschlein store. They are triple cleaned (what it says on the bag). I have gotten oats from Bluebonnet and they say race horse oats but I found that whatever oil they put in with them is too much especially in the summer time. Just my opinion. |

This is the reason I feed a pellet feed -- keeps the birds away from and out of my barn! I am not in the bird-feeding business! |
