Location: Montana | A while back I posted about my mare and issues with her back, got that figured out (has to do with her heat cycles) but I'm having a peculiar gate issue. Occasionally she will refuse the gate going in, but she doesn't want to go through the gate coming out either, like she's afraid it will hit her! To my knowledge (and I've owned her 9 years) she hasn't had anything happen regarding a gate, so I find it quite strange. And it isn't all the time. Not really sure what to do or what to check as this isn't a typical gate issue, in my opinion. Any advice? |

| That is a different one...
Any particular arena set up? For example if it were a covered pen to an outdoor holding pen Iβd be curious if eyesight was an issue going from light to dark.
Anywhere you can go that is run in/run out and see what happens? |

It has been mainly at one arena, outdoor arena. It happened at one other arena a few years ago that is also an outdoor arena. One gate in, one gate out, pretty straightforward set up. It has happened twice this year, but I run at this arena every couple of weeks and doesn't happen every time. It has me baffled too. I mainly run her at this arena because it is a smaller week night jackpot and she's a 3D/4D horse, so I don't run her at big shows.

Location: Illinois | Mine did the same thing with the out gate when he was having gate issues, only when the out gate was different than the in gate. If we went out the same gate we came in he was fine. I think in his brain that he thought he was gonna have to run when he went through that gate too. But once the original gate issue got resolved it was never an issue again |

Location: Oklahoma | my first horse I was having issues with gate going in for awhile (been vet checked and could find nothing) he refused the gate leaving is when I did a bone scan and found a bone cyst. 2nd horse he had issues of ducking and starting gate issues I fixed a couple things he got good then he refused gate going in and going out took to vet and found bone chip. So in my case means something! Weird I had 2 horses do it months apart. Only 2 in my whole life! |

Location: On My Horse! | Hmm, that is strange..Is the allyway between the back pens? Maybe the steers bother her? How about the lighting back there? We have a pen here that covered, but the back pen area is kinda dark and shadowy going in and coming out. Just a thought |

| I would make sure youβre riding her through the gate at the end. Donβt pull up and drop your rein loose and let her mosey. Keep her in your hand and push her up into the bridle and send her out the gate. No dilly dallying, donβt give her the opportunity to be silly. |

Location: Montana | There is no covering, no shadows to my knowledge other than people and horses warming up. There are some small bleachers back there, but there is a fence between them and the warm up area/gate. There are roping boxes back there, but they are closed off. You can't ride through the gate coming out, it is closed, so you have to stop or turn before riding out, its pretty much the same set up at every outdoor arena around here. If it happened every time, I think it would be easier to figure out, but it doesn't, and when its coming out of the gate too it really throws me off. |

Location: Oklahoma | Treat her for EPM...it messes with their sight and they will become scared of things they were never scared of before. I had one that suddenly started not loading or unloading when he'd been doing it fine for years. Treated him for EPM and he started going right in again. |
