Location: Oakdale, CA | What is the average months it takes a horse to get patterned on the barrels...... I was just wondering.........I know some pattern fast but what about the others.. I know there are alot of variables........... I sent my colt off to get 2 months and he has a great start.... Im really wanting to send him to someone in Arizona next feb. or march to get finished and seasoned...... am I asking too much?? Do you have any great recommendations on trainers in Arizona? Anyway thanks in Advance...................... |

There are so many factors involved there’s not a real solid answer some people start them on the pattern without them being broke, some don’t.
I personally, want the horse well broke with good body control, especially shoulder control, before he goes to the pattern. That usually takes 30-60 days, minimum, depending on how green he is when he comes.
As far as patterning it’s going to take 60-90 days to get him patterned. He’ll probably be fast loping thru easily without a lot of help but won’t be running thru. Speed will increase as he can maintain correct form easily and his mind stays good. |

| I can tell you my experience, my last gelding was broke late fall - cruising 4d times by the following fall (winter break in there). He didn't get consistent 2d/3d for a few years. And when I say consistent like send him in and let him work with the same expectation every time.
My new mare, I broke her last spring. She's been on the barrels for a month now, loping nice and correct but I think had a really good foundation. I hope to have her fast loping by end of October before winter break. However, I am not in a hurry. I think patterning can be done in 90 days... roughly. I think seasoning takes a LONG time but I dont consider them seasoned until consistent. |

Location: Louisiana | Mine took to the pattern in less than 30 days. BUT, big but, he was completely out of the baby stage when I started him and I think that made a huge difference.
I don't like riding babies, just my preference. So my husband broke him, did all the hard stuff, used him as a ranch pony, got him started heading and heeling, THEN I took him as a 5yo LOL. Turning barrels is his easiest job, and I think that's why he took to it so fast.
And that will be my plan with the next baby...let my husband do the early stuff, get him good and broke, and then start later.
I'm not afraid to admit I want to feel like I'm riding a finished horse LOL |
