My little gelding lays down, a lot. He’s usually missing a spot of hair on his hocks from it, but’s that’s it. Lately/since we put shoes on him (not entirely sure that’s the cause) they’ve been getting worse.

I’d like to invest in a pair of hock boots/guards for him, anyone have a favorite style/brand? Need to be good at staying on, ours are turned out 24/7 in a dry lot.

I used duct tape.  It worked really well.  I researched brands, and would have bought "hock shields" if I hadn't been so tapped out from vet bills.

Silly question, did you use anything under? Like vet wrap and the duct tape over?

I just did a square of duct tape over the sore.  If it comes off replace.  It was just enough cover for the sore to heal under the tape.  No meds were helping so I stopped those in order for the tape to stick.

I worked at an equine retirement facilty and we had tons of hock protectors of the Hock Shield brand. There is a cheaper option and a more expensive one - the more expensive ones have more velcro and an extra pad that kind of wraps around the front. They stay on better than the cheaper option. You do have to put them on pretty snug if you have a horse that you think will try to rub them off. However, they serve their purpose quite well and most horses kept them on no problem. Just clean them frequently. The fleece fluffs right back up. For horses with really bad sores, we would sew extra pads into the Hock Shields.
