Tips to get an impossible horse to drink away from home?
My mare will barely drink if not at all. Today was upper 80s and she wouldn't touch water until we got home. That's not acceptable. She needs to learn to drink. I've tried hydrated hay, watered Alfalfa pellets, bringing water from home, horse hydrator. None of these help much. What else can I try? She's fairly picky.

I have heard of you put cool aid in their wate at home then do same away from home it helps. My horses drink good away from home except for one place in Vegas. Even there though they will drink from a trough not a bucket. Soooo I’m hauling a small aluminum water trough with me this year!!! I was having to lead them to the stock trough last time I was there. Lol

How longΒ was it that she didnt drink any water or how long were you/she away from home?Β

Total about 6 hours.

It's hot and humid and she ran herald stupid when I tried to catch her. I would think she should have been super thirsty before I even loaded her much less after a day at the race. She definitely drank when I turned her out. I'm thinking it's when she's stressed, basically any time not in pasture

It won't help you right now but I use equiwinner patches for my mare who stopped drinking this spring. I did the 10 day treatment and then when I haul away for the weekend I use them it has helped a bunch. She is drinking great now. I also make sure to add a fair amount of salt to her grain .

I have a mare similiar to yours when I first bought her. Wouldn't drink when hauled. I get her to drink more since using the horse hydrator, however I've learned keeping her tummy happy has made her drink more on the road as well. I either give ulcerguard or the OxyGen Jailbreak, or Magnum44 and this combo has been keeping her drinking now when on the road for the past 3yrs or so.

Zysterra. I also found my gelding does not like to drink from a hanging bucket in a stall so we have one of those big tub trugs and put it in his stall on the ground and he drinks better. Its like drinking out of a water trough for him I guess.
