| I have just gotten this horse and while doing slow work is fairly soft and not trying to shoulder. If excited he does, not to hit a barrel but really leans on his inside shoulder and gets really stiff in the mouth and neck. He has been adjusted ect., he is sound. What drills and bits do you recommend. Looking for something different to try. Thanks |

Location: God's country | If I have one that is really serious about this, I will swap directions on them. I may not ever competitively run them, but I will get them going pretty good in the opposite direction. Sometimes it resets their brain, other times I may just start running them that way. |

Location: Claremore, OK | Counter arc him away from The barrel in a big counter arc (not small) at the exact point he starts to drop. Keep your hand forward, not back, close to the horn. Especially? For him , youβll need to do it with a little speed.
Iβve attached a link to a video I did demonstrating various counter arcs and the different spots you might need to use them.

| Counter arc. Make sure you let him make the mistake, then counter arc. Sometimes we hold them and don't realize. |

| My answer is to approach the barrel, at the moment you feel the shoulder drop, turn the opposite direction a few circles. Having said that, there was a guy in canada who swore he could fix any barrel hitter. He filled all his barrels with concrete and let them hit it... I guess he fixed the ones he didn't kill LOL ( No I do NOTTTTTT recommend this) |

Wow. That’s a good way to break your shin or fracture the horses shoulder. Some people |

Yes, yes and yes...and the key for me on this is the forward movement in the counter arc too!!! |

| Im the opposite of everyone else. I don't do rollbacks or counter arcs when I hve one that shoulders. I make sure they're soft, broke in the rib cage and stay standing up in the turns. Once I hve that accomplished I rarely tip a barrel. I've fixed a couple that were major barrel hitters and once I got them fixed they rarely hit a barrel. |

I am with you. I have never found that counter arching helps. I have found that taking them to the fence will help, but seems like a bandaid fix to get me through a weekend.
If I have one that shoulders I work on taking out all the resistance in the bridle. I've found this has helped me more than any counter arc drill. When starting my colts I have recently changed my 'lines' to the barrels and will ride up to my point versus pick up my rein and ask them to move over. Less motions = faster runs. |

| Square work around the barrels helped mine tremendously. She did exactly what you described and doesnβt do it anymore!!! |
