| As we all see- most horses that run barrels are solid and assumed to be quarter horse. I am looking at an APHA solid broodmare. Just wondering if I will have a harder time marketing the foals since they will likely be solid (plan to breed to QH). If you are comparing two horses and all other factors being the same would you lean toward the AQHA just because it's a quarter? Mare has a good solid set of papers and is beautiful. Just solid. Honestly if she were colored I'm not sure I would be interested myself and those APHA papers are just making me think twice. I realize you can't ride papers but I'm talking marketability here. |

| Talking marketability, I’m going to venture to say that you’ll have a harder time selling solid APHA foals and won’t get as much money as if it had been AQHA.
Like you mentioned, a horse is a horse is a horse but papers mean an AWFUL lot to people and solid APHA just doesn’t seem to be as desirable as AQHA....

Your solid Paint could be the best of the best at a futurity or later in life. Place in the 1D every single time and win big... But compared to a 1D AQHA of the same caliber you're talking tens of thousands of dollars if not more in difference between the 1D Paint and the 1D Quarter.... |

It's ALWAYS favored color. That's what a paint is.
To the OP: if you really are thinking about recovering or retaining value, get a registered, well bred, well built AQHA horse. But overall just the idea that you will be able to get the investment back is ludicrous. |

My thought is this mare is gorgeous and I like her breeding. I would raise some babies-mostly for personal use but will sell at some point down the road and if they are nice finished horses I don’t want to take a huge hit since they have paint papers. From the sound of it that most likely would be the case. |

| I would bet that about one third of the top barrel horses are solid cold paints and you would never know it. If a top barrel horse is for sale you better make your main criteria that the horse fits you, not the color. If you are selling prospects or a 3 or 4D horse yes paints are probably harder to sell.
APHA and AQHA have both done everything in their power to kill horse racing. The racing lines are the horses making the top barrel horse. If you want to argue “well so and so rides a cowbred horse” start another thread. This is about the value of paints compared to AQHA. The point I am making is the value is in the individual animal not the color. |

Agreed - but OP is referring to a broodmare and marketability of the foals. Not a top 1D performer....
In the case of foals, do you think they would be valued the same as AQHA foals? |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | I love a nice bred Paint a nice bred Quarter and a nice bred App. if they fit what I'm looking for I dont really care if its a paint, quarter or app.. You have the Paint people and the AQHA people and the App people, but the AQHA out weights any other breed. You just got to have the right person to come along and want what you have. |

Unfortunately no. Again, APHA has pretty well killed their racing program so the barrel racing industry suffers too. |

Location: Deep South | My hardest horses to sell have been solid APHA. The QH horse people don't want them and the paint people don't want them. Each one has gone for significantly less than a comparable AQHA. |
