Location: Smack Dab in the Middle | I have a horse that suddenly turned up lame in a rear limb. I thought it seemed up high, like in the hip. He improved a bit with walking, but given the choice would stand more, move less, but has not refused to move. Now, today when I put him out (he was in due to very cold, windy conditions) he is only stepping down on his toe only, avoiding his heel. Our ground has been wet, then frozen, thawed and frozen again, so I don't know if he's slipped, tripped or maybe an abscess? Thoughts? |

Location: TEXAS | My first thought would be abscess. Seems to be the easiest to rule out, anyway. |

How does one do that? And what do I need to do to help him? |

Location: Under The Big Sky Of Texas | Kinda sounds like a bruised heel or a abscess, but if not better in a few days I'll be hauling him in so the vet can have a look at him. |

They can "sting" themselves just by misplacing the foot. I had one come in to the corral, off the hill in my pasture at a dead run, through the snow, and he must have mis-stepped/slipped. He was already on a winter break, so I gave him a low dose of bute, stalled him for a couple of days, and he came out of it just fine. If lameness persists and its not an abscess I'd take him to the vet and make sure nothing serious happened. |

Location: Texas | Sounds like itβs in the foot not the hip. May be a good idea to put a call into your vet, hopefully just an abscess they can dig out. |

He finally busted a very nasty abscess, right at the coronet line above the heel bulb. He feels much better now! |
