Can anyone explain symptoms? My son's horse just doesn't act right. Kind of heavey/nasty cough here and there, off his food. Doesn't look bloomy. Lethargic too. Just had his teeth done and the vet didn't suspect any issues and his lungs sound fine.
Did he scope him? I had a vet tell me one time that my horse wasnt sick by just listening to his lungs and watching him move. I argured! and made vet do more digging because I know my horse! Ended up doing a trachea wash and vet mouth dropped open because of all the gunk and they sent it off to be tested vet said I would never have believed it bc he didn't show the classic signs. So please I know that it seems more money to test and dig but it is so worth it when they are better! and your horse is showing signs he doesnt feel good. Praying for you and horse!
I just dealt with this. I’m sure you’ve seen my pics on fb. It’s been a really rough journey. IA state told me a lot of times they show no symptoms until it’s too late. My mare had been retired for a few years. She would cough once in awhile when I first started riding but that was it. She was never lethargic or had any problems. We only discovered it because she had the tiniest of nosebleeds that wouldn’t go away after a couple days. I would talk to your vet about it but you’ll probably have to go to a bigger clinic to get the scope. Mine scoped my mare but saw the blood was coming from the pouch and told me I had to go to the university. Their carotids and facial nerves are behind the pouch. My vet said if my horse did have a clot and she bumped it when she scoped in there, she wouldn’t be able to stop the bleed.
Thanks everyone . This is a nice vet, they do a great job with teeth, but they are ranch vets. I'm going to call around and see who can take care of this. I let him out of the corral/round hay bale to pasture and I didn't hear him cough all day. So maybe just maybe it is the hay. I also used my EquiResp, but it didn't seem to help much.
