Veteran Posts: 124	I have two Shetland ponies that have hay bellies but still look "ribby." They were both purchased from the Amish and were underweight when I got them. The first one I purchased is looking much better, but the one I went back and got 3 months later isn't putting on weight as fast as I was hoping. I do plan on having her teeth done since I'm sure they haven't ever been floated. They've been getting 6-7 pounds of prairie hay daily each. I've also been doing a tiny amount of Safe Choice maintenance with a Remission supplement mixed in. I don't want to give too much sugar because one of them has foundered. So, what's the best way to add some more calories to their diet without upping the sugar? I'm not used to feeding easy but high maintenence keepers...... my big horses have always just been on free choice brome and done great.

Warrior Mom Posts: 4400	How about their deworming? I'd probably ditch the safe choice all together. I'd feed them extra hay or add in alfalfa cubes or pellets to get their supplements in. I've heard good things about cool calories supplement for extra without the bad sugars.

I'd feed them extra hay or add in alfalfa cubes or pellets to get their supplements in. I've heard good things about cool calories supplement for extra without the bad sugars. They were both de-wormed at the end of October. I will look into cool calories. Thanks!

Maybe try a ration balancer to so you are sure they are getting the right amount of vit/minerals along with some additional protein. If you are sure they are meeting nutritional requirements with their current program you can add flax seed, rice bran meal or an oil.
