Opinions on Jeff Smith saddles? Specifically the C3 type saddles? How do they fit on your stockier type horses? They look like nice saddles but I need something that has a wide bar angle to fit my cow type mare.

For what its worth, my C3
(and its a regular fit
) fits my tall withered, narrow, race bred looking horse really well. Never tried one on a stocky horse though.

I have 2 stocky mares and bought the wide C3 for them this summer and very happy with the fit on horse and the way it sit you in the saddle.

I found a regular to be an ok fit on my kind of thick cowbred. It was pinchy in the front - a CSI pad helped distribute the pressure but I’m not a fan of such a thick pad personally. Terrible on my really thick on. A Burns 20 tree is near perfect on both. I never tried a wide one, just didn’t run across one to try before I bought my Burns. I also didn’t realize how much some of my back pain out of the saddle was due to the high back - but it must have been because it solved itself when I changed saddles.

I bought a C3 wide fit for my cow horse and it didn't fit her. It was too narrow. I liked everything about the saddle, it was super comfortable, I liked running in it as it held me in, but it just wasn't wide enough. I usually ride in 7.5" gullet and this gullet just wasn't wide enough. I spoke to Jeff Smith, he says he does have an "extra wide" gullet but you have to special order that. I had to sell it. I currently ride in a Pozzi Pro #10 wide and it fits my mare just fine.

haven't rode or had one that fit a horse right. they all rolled. I've always been unhappy with them. IMO there are far better trees out there.
I've rode the barrel saddles and cutters.

That's so interesting because the C3 was one of the only trees that fit my horse nearly perfect. Left a perfect pattern and laid flat. Guess it all depends on what kind of horses you ride!
