| Help, Im having a heck of a time finding a saddle that fits my mare. She's recently gotten really cinchy. I've been riding her in an Old Carl ammerman because I've thought it's been the best fit yet. She's got a tall wither and a wide back. I'll try and post pictures but I am new to posting on this site
I've tried corriente, Tami Jeff smith reg tree, and an old circle Y.

My BO has a shark finned wide backed horse. The only think that really worked for her was a BM (which she sold because her horse was too sensitive to her movements in the saddle) and a Martha Josey wide flex tree (one of the new ones). |

Location: Georgia | So I have a saddle fitting thread going right now and I've learned a ton. Your mare is basically the opposite of mine. Obviously she has pominent withers but I would need a better picture to determine what kind of saddle she needs. Do you happen to have a picture of her standing square? Do you have pictures of how the Ammerman sits on her? Without a pad? Sweat marks after a ride?
Without seeing a better picture, this is what I think and I stand to be corrected. First of all, she has high withers meaning you are going to need a saddle with a tall gullet. Some saddle brands naturally have higher gullets than others. I just tried a Martin FX3 that was very tall. Because your mare has a big drop behind her withers, I'm thinking that you will need to find a saddle with more rock and twist. Rock refers to the curve from front to back of the saddle tree. Twist is basically the angle change from the withers to the horses back. From what I've been told, the Double J#10 tree has rock and twist and might would be a good option to try.
Additionally, I used to have a mare shaped very similar to yours. She had high withers but also has big, broad shoulders. My Double J Lynn Mckenzie fit her like glove. The LM's have a slight flare to the front of the saddle (bars) which gives the horse more shoulder room if needed. A good friend rides her higher withered horse in a Tammy Fischer treeless and likes it alot. |

| Wow, shark fin didn't even know that was a thing! Thanks so much. I will have to attach more pictures. I wasn't sure if the link to the picture would work or not. |

Location: North Dakota | She definately going to be a harder fit b/c of her high withers and where they sit in relation to her heart girth (behind the heart girth).
I love love the Circle Y Flex2 saddles (I would do a regular tree for your mare and not the wide) BUT personally, they really don't have the highest wither clearance. You'd have to try one on to see if you had enough wither clearance. But I like their fitting philosphy and they work for all 3 of my horses (two go in the regular and one goes in the wide).
You could also try to find a Crates Meleta Brown. She's got fabulous wither clearance on her saddles. I think I just saw a used one that is currently listed on horsesaddleshop . com

Look into G bar G saddles. Jane Melby endorses them. I have seen her saddles fit the darndest of horses. From my horse, who is a very low withered/broad shouldered cow horse to a shark fin Dash Ta Fame bred horse. They are spendy but everyone I know who has one, loves them. |

I bought one for my impossible to fit gelding and not only does it fit him great, it fits my other 2 horses well enough I use it on them also. But it does fit my big gelding the best...he has a more prominent wither, but when he's in shape he really fills out through his back. He also has big shoulders and that's where I always had an issue fitting him, everything would pinch him, this saddle frees up his shoulders. The #10 tree isn't near as extreme as some salesmen would have you believe though. I love my saddle, not only does it fit my horses, my balance and confidence immediately improved when I swapped to it from a treeless. I had gained weight and felt like I just couldn't find my "center" in the treeless anymore.

| I ride in a Just B Natural by Circle Y in a horse that's built very similar. I use a 1 inch 5 star pad with the wither cutout

Location: Fort Worth / Springtown | Your mare is beautiful! I hope you find a saddle that will help her do her best and not interfere. I have a 22 year old gelding that looked a lot like her in his prime...but with a little higher wither. Her back looks short in one picture - would you say she's short backed, also? My old gelding has extremely short back and extremely high wither. I could write a book with all the things he's taught me....and it would include not only saddles, but cinches and pads.
Tried over 60 saddles on him - some just sitting on top but have ridden/competed in at least 30/35. He has won 1D titles, but sometimes he would be leading by a large margin for 1/2 the year, then get sore from the saddle and come up reserve champion by the end of the year....or by the end of a series.....or even by the time finals came around at the rodeo or a 3 day race.
I have found a saddle that makes me wish I could start all over with him....or look for another horse with a high wither/short back. I am still running him.
Len Brown The Grip. short lenght, light weight, no pinch on that high wither.
There are very few saddles that will fit a high withered horse - Deb Sibley has one. I had a Just B Natural and I actually had to take a box cutter to it to clear his wither (not on the pommel, but the padding underneath the pommel). Even if the pommel may look high, you hav to look underneath at the seat of the saddle - it can still be hitting the wither, even if the pommel is not).
I wish I had more time to write - I love these topics but I'm too busy at work to go into more detail at the moment.
This is a saddle that -- before I stripped it --- fit 2 of my horses great but my high withered horse not at all. And this is the way so many saddles would fit him.
