It is as big of a deal as the NFR?  Is it tough to qualify?  How prestigious is it?

I don't think its as big of a deal as in vendors and shoping that the NFR seems to have sure backed the traffic up though and I did notice way more people in the city during it. It was sold out every preformance its first year here in Red Deer.

The people in the top qualifying can darn sure compete with anybody. We have world class Rodeo athletes up here in all events, Its tough to make and it tough to win. I look very highly upon the CFR and have a lot of dreams around it personally.

I can't answer any of your questions but I can tell you I have family that goes (to watch) every year and they say it's a great rodeo.

It's very much our NFR, even though the pay-out isn't as sweet. The top competitors are the top anywhere in the world, but the middle and bottom are a bit looser than in the US. Key to running in Canada? You need a horse that can stand up on cement-like ground, and shifty-deep sand. In Alberta they run chuckwagons at many of the big rodeos, and they like a very hard surface. In BC (not that there's many rodeos left here) it rains, a lot, so they put in sand that won't pack. The rodeos themselves payout like slot machines.

Check out www.rodeocanada.com for more info
CFR paid out $1,650,000 in 2018 to contestants. Callahan Crossley won just under $100k (including CFR) rodeoing in Canada last year. There are not as many rodeos in Canada so we have a minimum amount members have to go to in order to qualify for CFR instead of a maximum. We have some of the largest payouts in North American (CPRA/PRCA/WPRA approved) like K-days, Ponoka and Strathmore. Currently a majority of our rodeo are co-approved so we have a lot of Americans that rodeo up here and their money counts for both the Canadian and World Standings.
The finals has been held in Edmonton, AB for the last 44 years and was moved to Red Deer, AB in 2018 which was a big change for everyone involved.

The CFR is not the same experience as the NFR. Not as many spectators, not as many trade shows.

I would say to qualify has it differences. There is a minimum amount of rodeos, and due to the short season, and vast terrain, one can argue it is financially more difficult. Also more trying on the horses.
