i know this has been posted before but there’s always new studies and feeds coming out! What do you guys feed your weanling / yearling?

I’m getting mine in November and I want to be ready for him. He will be in a 7 ac pasture with two older horses. The pasture doesn’t grow good grass at all. So I feed hay almost year round. We get orchardgrass. Orchardgrass/alfalfa and alfalfa. That’s mostly what they grow locally.

I just feed what I feed everything else here that is fat and shiney.  Not into supplementing a baby and just let them grow into the genetics that they're given at birth.  I know that's not real trendy though :

What Teehaha said, I did the same when I had babys, they got what I was feeding everybody else, was not into the supplement thing either. I know the supplement thing is all the rave. I think a good healthy diet along with a good grass hay and alfalfa is the way to go.

The big thing you need is just to make sure they are receiving enough minerals to grow healthy bone and enough protein to grow everything else, 14-16% protein is good. And then of course you want to avoid overfeeding so they don't get physitis. Alfalfa has good protein but it has a lower amount of Phosphorus than calcium so they may need some way of getting more phosphorus. Copper is also an important part of growth. You don't have to get real fancy other than making sure all of that is balanced. If you are feeding a good mineral to all your horses with a good hay diet (probably mixed grass/alfalfa) you would probably be fine. Bluebonnet has a really good growth feed, Intensify. We have also fed Ultium Growth and had them do well on it. Rejuvenaide is a good mineral supplement just for growing babies if you want to look into that.

No bluebonnet dealers near me. Only one in CA and they are at the opposite end of the state lol. My vet has a mineral mix for our area so I guess I will check with them to see what they may recommend. I feed my other horses california trace if they need the SE. I’m not big into special stuff unless there’s a problem and I am not super educated on feeding the babies. I usually buy two year olds or older.
I do have Renew gold here I give to one horse when he needs it. They seem to do good on it.

Can foals get epiphysitis from alfalfa and if so, how do you cure it?

I fed mine Ultium Growth from the time I got him at 4 months until he was 2 years old. Along with 2 flakes of alfalfa 2x a day. Worked well for him

Any foal with a mineral imbalance can get it. If they are growing too fast (getting too much) or growing too slow (not getting enough) they are likely to have it. Generally getting their minerals and protein back in balance will fix it. Rejuvenaide is a great first step for that. The big thing alfalfa by itself can do is get their calcium phosphorus ratio out of balance. So if you add phosphorus you can rebalance it.

My filly now gets alfalfa, bermuda, and Purina strategy. Since adding the Strategy, I have noticed a huge difference in her growth plates. I think she had a nutritional imbalance.

Yes, she would have an imbalance on that diet. The levels in both Bermuda and alfalfa will throw things off and so will Strategy which is not really meant for growing horses. Consider adding some Rejuvenaide. You can order it online from Progressive Nutrition. It's even on sale right now.

I got my hay test results back. Looks like it’s 18% protein. And .93/.27 (ca/ph) I’m not sure how to read it exactly but I think that’s what it says. Its grass alfalfa (60/40)

 What’s
Rejuvenaide?

I got my baby when she was 10 months old. She’s now 18 months old.

Ultium Growth (by directions on bag)
1 flake alfalfa
1 flake Timothy
1 flake fescue
On grass during the day (my pasture is a mix of grasses)

Free choice grass hay (or pasture depending on the time of year), a flake of alfalfa am/pm and Renew Gold in pm! They also have access to a mineral tub. All look like rock stars! I think worming is very important to stay up on too, especially for colts!

Simple, cost effective and it works for all ages!
